In the nineteenth episode of the "Foundations" podcast, we recall a conversation with Marta Kluk - an architect, a graduate of the Cracow University of Technology, who gained professional experience in London, and today combines design work with travel. Marta talks about her first steps in an architectural office, how the pandemic changed her perspective on the profession, and why she decided to become a digital nomad.
Can an architect work remotely?
Marta admits that at the beginning of her studies and career it was difficult for her to imagine that architecture could be reconciled with working online. This changed during the pandemic, when offices around the world began to function remotely. For her, this was a turning point - she discovered that design could also be done effectively from outside the office.
Marta already passed her first test of working outside Poland during a trip to Madrid. There she found out how much can be learned by working in an international environment, and how the work culture in Spain differs from that in Poland or the UK. This experience opened her eyes to the fact that the profession of architecture does not have to be assigned to one place.
In London, Marta used to work in an architectural office, but lockdown forced a change in the way things were done. Working remotely proved not only possible, but also very effective. That's when the idea occurred that with a laptop you could be equally productive in different parts of the world.
digital nomads and life on the road
Martha today combines her design work with travel, in keeping with the growing trend of digital nomadism. She tells what the daily life of an architect working remotely looks like - from organizing her time, to working with an online team, to the challenges of time zone differences.
Marta Kluk's story shows that architecture does not have to be a profession permanently tied to one place. Remote work and a mobile lifestyle can be a way to grow professionally and personally, as well as a chance to explore the world.
