Stanisław Podkański, Katowice’s long-time City Architect, has passed away

On August 9, 2026, at the age of 81, Stanisław Podkański, the long-time City Architect of Katowice who oversaw the city’s development during a period of exceptionally rapid growth, passed away.

Stanisław Podkański was born in 1945. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology. As a practicing architect, he co-designed, among other projects, the iconic Tourism and Entertainment Park in Nieporaz, located in the Alwernia municipality near Kraków (designed by Yuma Invest, An Archi Group, NS MoonStudio)—a complex of thirteen monolithic reinforced-concrete “cosmic” domes, project nominated for the European Mies van der Rohe Award 2005.

Podkański was a member of the Chamber of Architects, the Association of Polish Architects, and the Society of Polish Urban Planners. From 1991 to 1994, he served as Vice President of the Katowice branch of SARP and was also a long-time competition judge. From September 2010 to March 2014, he served as Chairman of the Municipal Urban Planning and Architecture Commission in Katowice, and in April 2014, he began working as the city architect. He held this position until 2024, when he retired.

For nearly a decade, he served as City Architect of Katowice. He contributed his knowledge, experience, and dedication to our city, participating in discussions and projects related to its development, architecture, and urban planning. He was a man devoted to his profession, closely connected to the community of architects and urban planners , and someone for whom Katowice and its future were of the utmost importance

According to the Katowice Branch of SARP, the funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 11, at 2:00 p.m. at the Municipal Cemetery in Katowice at 9 Murckowska Street.
