Will the rainbow win? The last day of voting in the civic budget

30 of June '22

Will the rainbow return to Savior Square? And will Warsaw's bicycle network finally be completed? This depends, among other things, on the results of the civic budget vote, which ends today.

Ursus ahead of Białołęka and Wawer - this is the district "civic ranking" in the capital. In these districts, male and female residents cast the most votes in the civic budget. You can still do so until Thursday, June 30, at 11:59 p.m. In the civic budget, you can vote for 15 district projects and 10 city-wide projects.

As statistics from previous years show, residents and citizens most often choose projects concerning urban greenery and bicycle infrastructure. Contrary to the fears of critics of the participatory budget, fancies and useless gadgets are rarely implemented as part of it. Sidewalks pedestrian crossings and sports facilities were next in the priorities of Warsaw residents. This ranking is also a sign for the city in which areas investment from the central budget should be increased.

Thereturn of the iconic rainbow to Zbawiciela Square is an idea put forward by activists from Homokomando - a group of people fighting for LGBT+ rights who share a love of sports. Initially, the idea was rejected by officials. Project reviewers raised objections to protecting the copyright of the original installation by Julita Wojcik, we wrote about the case in the article. However, the authors of the idea argued that the idea was not to reconstruct the rainbow, but to build a new and permanent installation continuing the traditions of the site. In the voting, the idea can be supported by casting a vote for the project "We unravel Warsaw" in the all-city budget(No. 1809).

There is also a wide range of options for those who would like to support initiatives to green city streets. These include the "2050 Trees for Warsaw" project , whose authors write that they "want a green Warsaw, full of trees, especially in times of climate challenges and the fight against smog.", or the project " More big trees in Warsaw - greenery, shade and clean air," which envisages planting trees with a trunk circumference of 18 to 35 cm, especially in the vicinity of major thoroughfares in the city, complemented by plantings of low vegetation (shrubs and tall grasses) that will reduce dust from the streets.

You can also cast your vote for projects related to improving the lot of non-human residents of Warsaw. "Adaptation of Area 13 at the Shelter on Paluch for behavioral needs" is a project to furnish a place where the most wronged dogs, requiring the care of dog behaviorists, are housed. Dogs with a low level of socialization, severely anxious, unfamiliar with a leash, afraid of touch. The changes will help them socialize faster, increase their chances of finding a home. Cat lovers, on the other hand, can support the implementation of the idea "So that cats on the Paluch do not have to sit in cages!", the aim of the project is to improve their living conditions and increase the likelihood of adoption.

Voting

You can cast your vote on the Civic Budget website, until the end of the month.
