Throne of concrete not only for the king

Another workshop in the Concrete Architecture series will be held in early September in Krakow. The program of the workshop titled. "Game of Thrones" includes lectures on concrete architecture and technology. During the five-day class, participants will have the opportunity to design and then make forms that will be concreted. At the end there will be a presentation of the works. An exhibition of the objects created during the workshop is planned for the 11th Concrete Days 2020 in Wisla. The organizers will cover the cost of accommodation and food, and announce that the best realization will stand on the AGH campus in Krakow.

Who will sit on the throne?

Workshop participants will be divided into five groups of five. Each team will develop a technical design, and will be given concrete of no more than 0.5 m³, the concrete may be reinforced. The castings will be made in individual formwork designed and assembled by workshop participants (size 50×50×160 cm).

As the organizers say about the theme of this year's workshop:

Our throne is intended to be unique, but since it is to become an attraction for AGH students, it will also be a useful thing. [...] The quest for uniqueness leads contemporary architecture to break with the modernist understanding of function. Our Game of Thrones has no real or perhaps only known investor. After all, today architecture is trying to break with the modernist understanding of the function of buildings, aiming for novelty, originality, uniqueness. [...] In our projects we give the authors complete freedom and hope that they will get completely lost between reality and imagination. However, the result must be real, and the work is to be unique.
