Architecture that grows out of place. Realizations by Gion A. Caminady

29 of September '25

The work of Gion A. Caminada is remarkably consistent - each of his works is in dialogue with the landscape, history and the people who are supposed to live in it. This is architecture that does not impose itself with form, but becomes part of the place.

Vrin - a laboratory of rooted architecture

Most of Caminada's projects were built in his home village of Vrin in Grisons. It was there that he designed:

  • Stiva da morts - a farewell chamber for the dead, subtle and respectful of local rituals,

  • a sports and multi-purpose hall in Vrin-Cons with an innovative roof structure by engineer Jürg Conzett,

  • a community slaughterhouse and butcher shop, carpentry shops, as well as residential houses and barns,

  • elements of everyday infrastructure - from a bus stop to a telephone booth.

Each of these buildings has become part of the fabric of the village, being built in collaboration with the local community and artisans.

Beyond the native valley

Caminada is not limited to his region. His achievements include:

  • hotels and restaurants (such as Hotel Maistra 160 in Pontresina),

  • observation towers, such as those in Reussdelta, which open up new perspectives on the landscape,

  • schools and boarding schools that respond to the educational needs of local communities,

  • as well as experimental economic or community developments.

People- and nature-friendly architecture

All of Caminada's projects are characterized by the skillful use of wood, which the architect knows from the ground up as a former carpenter. His solutions have often been ahead of sustainable building trends, and their simplicity is matched by remarkable durability and precision craftsmanship.

Philosophy in practice

I don't want to build more. I want to build smarter - a motto that is reflected in every Caminada project.

His projects show that architecture does not have to be monumental to be meaningful. It only needs to be rooted in the place that hosts it.
