Ruukki ready to deliver world's first building products made from steel produced without fossil fuels

02 of October '23

Ruukki Construction, an SSAB Group company, has produced the world's first building products made from SSAB steel made without fossil fuels. The pilot products were produced at Ruukki's factory in Alajärvi, Finland.

Ruukki will supply the first-ever sandwich panels, facade cladding and roofing made from fossil-free steel, so-called fossil-free steel, to carefully selected customers with an extensive sustainability program. Emissions generated during the production phase will be minimized where possible through the use of green energy and the selection of material and logistics options with the lowest possible environmental impact.

"We are proud to contribute to the green transformation of our industry. Building products made from SSAB steel produced without fossil fuels are important drivers of sustainable construction and help our customers significantly reduce the environmental impact of their buildings throughout their life cycle. The largest emissions are related to the use of buildings. That's why we have been investing in the development and production of sustainable and energy-efficient building products for decades," says Sami Eronen, CEO of Ruukki Construction.

"For years, we at Ruukki have been taking extensive measures at various stages of the supply chain to reduce the carbon footprint of our products. Our systematic development work is reflected, for example, in our recently updated environmental panel declarations (EPDs), where the global warming potential values have improved significantly," says Jani Backlund, Business Director, Building Envelopes, Ruukki in Finland.

The products, made of fossil fuel-free steel, are part of Ruukki's drive to guide the construction industry toward carbon-neutral buildings. In addition, this year Ruukki will conduct a pilot project with building products made from SSAB Zero™ recycled steel, with the goal of being the first to launch a state-of-the-art product family based on recycled steel in 2024. The fossil fuel-free steel products will be offered on a commercial scale starting in 2026.
