Forward plots, or sustainable design in the bush

19 of May '22

Design is entering the bush as part of the "Forward Allotments" project . Its goal is to support the sustainable development of Warsaw's allotment gardens and open them to residents. The fourth edition of the program, which will focus on accessibility for people with disabilities, has just been launched.

This year's activities of the Urban Greenery Board, carried out on its behalf by the Association of Urban Activities "Rozkwit," are aimed primarily at improving the accessibility of allotment gardens for the blind and visually impaired. The plans include workshops, walks, design activities and art events, among others. School of Form SWPS, Stroboscope Art Space and the Foundation for Accessible Visual Culture - Multisensory will participate, among others.

gardens for all

Participants in the activities will first diagnose and test in practice the possibility of adapting the space of the gardens to the needs of people with different perceptual and motor conditions. The overarching goal is to enable the widest possible audience to experience the garden. This is a continuation of initiatives undertaken in previous seasons.

joint activities

The "Renewal" intergenerational community garden, which opened in 2021 on the grounds of the "New" allotment gardens, has planned, among other things, gardening classes for people with disabilities, including intellectual disabilities. They have been prepared in cooperation with the Agis Association. A series of workshops is also planned.

prototyping

Last year, a group of students from the School of Form at SWPS University under the guidance of Mega Malinowska visited selected allotment gardens in Warsaw. Based on their observations, they then prepared small spatial forms inspired by them. This type of activity will also be repeated this year, but the task for the young designers will be to address the functioning of people with disabilities in allotment spaces. We will see the results of their creative efforts in the summer at exhibitions summarizing the design process at the Stone Pavilion and the Rotary Cultural Center in Jazdów.

art and competitions

Once again, the program will include an artist residency in an allotment garden in cooperation with Stroboscope Art Space. The selected project inspired by the gardens and executed on the allotment will creatively address the issue of accessibility of gardens for people with disabilities and their experience of allotment spaces.

In addition, for the first time, allotment gardeners will take part in the Warsaw in Flowers competition, and on October 15 there will be a celebration of the international holiday for the blind and visually impaired (International White Stick Day).
