An edifice of the National Holodomor-Ludomor Museum in Kiev is under construction

04 of December '20

The construction of the edifice of the National Holodomor-Genocide Museum in Kyiv, one of the largest museum facilities under construction in Central and Eastern Europe, is entering another second phase of construction. Overseeing its construction are co-designers from the Nizio Design International studio.

Blended into the relief of the area, the museum is being built on an axis running from a vantage point to a monument commemorating the victims of the Holodomor - the genocide caused by the artificially induced Great Famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933. The designers' goal was to fit the building into both the tectonics and the landscape of the slope of the Dnieper valley, near the Pechersk Lavra. In turn, its form is meant to be "a representation of the idea of bringing to light the deliberately hidden truth about the Holodomor."

The architectural design of the museum building as part of the second phase of construction of the Holodomor Victims Memorial Complex in Ukraine was developed by the Ukrainian studio Project Systems LTD in cooperation with the Polish office Nizio Design International. Miroslaw Nizio's studio, together with designers from the office of Haley Sharpe Design Ltd, has also begun work on the arrangement of the exhibition inside the museum.

Miroslaw Nizio's atelier has a track record of designing museums dealing with historically difficult subjects, such as the Ulma Family Museum of Poles Saving Jews during World War II in Markowa or the Mausoleum of Martyrdom of Polish Villages in Michniów. Currently, in the realization of the museum in Kiev, the studio is involved, among other things, in supervising the selection of the technologies and finishing materials used and their consistency with the design solutions, as well as proposals for interior furnishings, samples of finishing materials and approval of prototypes for the non-standard architectural solutions used in the project. This work will continue until December 2021.
