Ceramic flat tile on the facade

26 of October '21

Minimalism and industrial style - these are among the most important architectural trends in 2021. The aesthetic simplicity of the masses of modern houses and commercial buildings also applies to roofing. Flat ceramic tiles fit perfectly into this style. They have become the distinguishing feature of the architecture of the hotHel boutique hotel in Hel. The DOMINO model by CREATON was used here not only on the roof, but also partially on the building facade.

Currently, tile manufacturers focus on simplicity, aesthetic minimalism and ergonomics of the proposed solutions. Hence the growing popularity of flat tiles, which perfectly harmonize with the modern architecture of newly constructed buildings. Designers value them mainly for the effect of uniform surfaces of the roof slopes and the possibility of laying them also on the facade. Thanks to such a procedure, the body of the building gives the impression of a harmonious and minimalist structure, so desirable in modern architecture.

hoteHel - what does it look like in practice?

The unique qualities of the ceramic flat tile on the facade were used in the completed project of the boutique hotel hotHel by Kluj Architekci studio. The building was located in Hel on a plot of land that is a sandy dune and surrounded by pine trees characteristic of the coastal landscape. The shape, size, as well as the colors of the roof and facade of the building - as well as others in the vicinity - were dictated by the provisions of the local zoning plan. That's why the hotel's usable area is less than 220 sq m, and its body is characterized by a simple gabled roof. The architecture of the building is distinguished by its characteristic white loggias and black glazed tile roof and side elevations.

Since the building's dimensions, shape and color scheme had to relate to the neighboring buildings, the distinctive elements of HotHel were to become the large white loggias of its apartments. To make them even more visible, we decided to place them against a dark background," says arch. Piotr Kluj of KLUJ architekci studio responsible for the hotel's design. - In order to achieve this effect, we designed the same material on both the roof and elevations - a black-colored tile, which, thanks to the mansard tile, smoothly transitions from a slanted plane to a vertical one. This causes the boundary between the roof and the facade to disappear, and in this way we obtained a uniform, contrasting background for the aforementioned distinctive white hotHel elements.

CREATON solutions and the DOMINO tile model with a strongly marked lower edge were chosen for the roof and facade of the hotHelu building. The building took on an interesting shape and blended in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

Unique effect and exceptional functionality

However, in the case of the boutique hotHel, the choice of DOMINO clay roof tiles is not only a guarantee of an excellent architectural effect. In the context of the demanding atmospheric conditions of the coastal climate, the clay tile here makes ideal use of its thermal insulation properties. Thanks to its increased heat capacity, the material is slower to heat up, but also slower to lose heat. In practice, this means that hotel interiors are warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

DOMINO ceramic tile also stands for timeless aesthetics. It looks particularly good on buildings with simple masses. Thus, it is ideal for gabled roofs - such as those of HotHel - as well as multi-slope roofs. But the DOMINO model is not only an attractive design and many color options. It is also an exceptional solution in terms of durability and tightness of sheathing.

The use of CREATON clay tile on the facade makes it possible to achieve a visually simple, compact building block. This can be perfectly seen in the example of the HotHel architecture. Such a procedure also deprives the building of protruding elements, such as guttering, thanks to the use of mansard tiles that provide a smooth transition between the roof slope and the facade. In this way, its body takes on a coherent, minimalist - in line with trends - flair and is fully organized visually.

CREATON clay tile is the ideal solution if the building's assets are to be modern appearance, functionality and energy efficiency. It is enough to look at the block of the Hel HotHel. One even wants to look here and see what is hidden within the walls of this remarkably designed building.
