Resin floors in hotels - design trends

05 of September '24

Vacation travel is an opportunity for many people to visit hotels located in the farthest corners of the world. Solutions that are gaining popularity in such facilities are seamless resin floors. In addition to parking lots, where resin-based materials have long been widely used, they can increasingly be found in hotel lobbies or restaurants, as well as in back rooms - in kitchens, social areas and technical corridors.

Experts from the Flowcrete brand, a leading manufacturer of resin floors, present the world's most interesting trends in the design of these systems in hotel facilities.

Resin terazzo - in lobbies, restaurants, children's playroom

In representative spaces, including hotel lobbies, designers are increasingly taking advantage of the extensive possibilities offered by the use of terazzo resin floors. This elegant solution is created on the basis of colored epoxy resin and natural marble aggregate (Mondéco Classic) or a mixture of granite and flint aggregates (Mondéco Earth). Repeated grinding and polishing operations give this flooring a smooth surface with a subtle sheen, making it look like natural stone.

Among the advantages of these flooring systems, in addition to their attractive, decorative appearance, are their high durability and abrasion resistance - they stand up well to the payloads associated with heavy foot traffic and wheeled suitcase traffic. Importantly, epoxy terazzo allows a great deal of design freedom. It can be made in almost any color from the RAL palette, and patterns can be created on it, such as hotel logos.

Durable industrial coatings in "staff-only" areas

In areas where only employees have access, durability and functionality of flooring solutions are of primary importance. In staff areas, smooth and easy-to-clean single-color poured-type systems, such as Flowshield LXP, are often used. In technical corridors, on the other hand, resin coatings with quartz sand backfill are used, giving them slip resistance. Trends are dominated by shades of gray, but these materials can be made in almost any color.

Typical solutions for the food industry in restaurant kitchens

Kitchens, where meals are prepared for hotel restaurants, are rooms with special requirements for chemical, thermal and mechanical resistance of floors. For this reason, robust systems derived from the food industry, such as polyurethane-cement floors from the Flowfresh group with the antimicrobial additive Polygiene®, are often used in them. Their use in food service kitchens is supported by properties such as an easy-to-clean, seamless surface, resistance to heavy foot and cart traffic, resistance to the substances used in them, and the possibility of cleaning with hot water or steam under pressure.

Stone carpets - a way to make impressive balconies, terraces and pool areas

For pool areas, which in the case of hotels located in warmer climates are located outside, and for balconies and terraces next to guest rooms, designers are constantly looking for original materials and technologies. A solution that is gaining in popularity is very striking and pleasing stone carpet type resin floors, or Rustik. These systems are constructed from marble aggregate and clear epoxy resin. They use rounded, fine pebbles that are softly walked on, evoking the feel of a natural path.

Resin coatings in underground garages and on landings

Resin flooring in garages and parking lots, such as polyurethane-quartz systems from the Deckshield group, is already standard in high-end hotels. Helicopter helipads are also being designed in facilities providing hospitality services. In the case of high-rise buildings in city centers, they are located on the roofs of buildings, and in larger leisure and recreation complexes - at ground level. Solutions based on polyurethane resins from the Deckshield group also work well in these types of applications, most often as tailor-made systems with carefully selected thickness and anti-slip properties.
