The year 2029 is already changing the VRF market. Are you ready for R32?

02 of July '26

Changes related to environmental protection and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are having an increasingly significant impact on the HVAC industry. With the entry into force of EU Regulation 2024/573, manufacturers and investors must prepare for the next phases of phasing out refrigerants with a high Global Warming Potential (GWP). Particularly significant changes affect VRF systems, which have been one of the most popular solutions for commercial buildings for years.

The new regulations are accelerating
the market’s transformation

Under current regulations, starting in January 2029, it will no longer be possible to place new VRF systems with a capacity exceeding 12 kW on the market if they use a refrigerant with a GWP exceeding 750. This means that R410A, a refrigerant that has been popular for many years and has a GWP of 2,088, will have to give way to more environmentally friendly solutions.

R32, with a GWP of only 675, is emerging as the natural successor. This is nearly three times lower than that of R410A, enabling it to meet the requirements of the new regulations and reduce the environmental impact of air conditioning systems.

LG is ready for the upcoming changes

LG Electronics has been consistently developing R32-based VRF technology for many years. The first solutions of this type appeared as early as 2019, and the next major step was the 2023 launch of Multi V units using R32 with capacities ranging from 22.4 to 33.6 kW.

Currently, LG’s product lineup already includes R32-based VRF systems with capacities reaching 78.4 kW, and the manufacturer has announced further expansion of the product range. This confirms that the technology is ready not only for future regulatory requirements but also for large-scale commercial projects.

High efficiency even under challenging conditions

Modern Multi V units are equipped with advanced control algorithms and features utilizing artificial intelligence. The system analyzes building usage patterns and automatically adjusts operating parameters, ensuring high comfort while minimizing energy consumption.

The units maintain full functionality even under demanding climatic conditions. In heating mode, they can operate at outdoor temperatures as low as -30°C, maintaining 100% of their rated capacity down to -10°C.

Also noteworthy is the patented design of the three-section heat exchanger. The lower part of the heat exchanger helps heat the unit’s base during heating operation, accelerating the defrosting process and reducing the risk of ice buildup.

R32 — Differences That Matter

Compared to R410A, R32 is a single-component refrigerant. This means easier operation and simpler service procedures. In the event of a leak, there is no issue with changes in the refrigerant mixture ratio, as is the case with multi-component refrigerants.

At the same time, R32 is classified as an A2L safety-class refrigerant, which means it has low flammability. Depending on the application, additional safety measures may be required, such as refrigerant detection, alarm systems, shut-off valves, or additional room ventilation.

LG has experience gained from numerous R32-based projects and provides design support at every stage of the project. This includes both equipment selection and analysis of safety requirements, as well as identifying the necessary safety measures for a specific facility.

One system — many possibilities

A wide portfolio of indoor units makes LG VRF systems suitable for virtually any type of building. The product range includes wall-mounted, cassette, and duct-type units, as well as solutions designed to integrate with air handling units and domestic hot water systems.

As a result, a single system can provide heating, cooling, and domestic hot water support, serving as a comprehensive source of comfort for the entire facility.

Advanced noise reduction features are an additional advantage. Solutions such as Noise Target Control and Adaptive Noise Control enable precise adjustment of the unit’s operating noise level to meet project requirements, allowing compliance with even the most stringent environmental standards.

R32: The New Standard for VRF Systems

All signs point to R32 becoming the dominant refrigerant in the VRF systems segment. Although additional design requirements must be taken into account, the benefits of a lower GWP, high energy efficiency, and compliance with future regulations make this a natural direction for market development.

An additional advantage is the ability to earn more points in building certification systems such as BREEAM, LEED, and WELL. For investors, this means not only compliance with regulations but also greater value and competitiveness for buildings in the future.

The year 2029 may seem far off, but for the HVAC industry, the transformation has already begun. Companies that prepare early enough for the upcoming changes will gain both a technological and a business advantage. R32 is no longer a solution for the future — it is a solution for the present.
