What will the Chelm train station look like? Reconstruction of the 1960s railroad station.

05 of June '20

The Chelm train station, built in the 1960s, will undergo a major metamorphosis - the effects of the post-modern reconstruction of the late 1990s will disappear, and the facility will be adapted to current standards in traveler service and technical requirements. The lump of the facility will maintain its original modernist character, but will undergo modifications.

The station in Chel m will consist of three floors - the first floor will feature spaces related to traveler services (waiting rooms, ticket offices, public toilets) as well as commercial and local government areas, the second floor will be used for offices, and the underground will be used for technical facilities.

The station's facade will be made of light-colored facing brick, referring to the chalk mining and processing industry that led to the city's development in the 1920s. One of the walls of the station's two-story high lobby will be decorated with a plan of the city in the form of an eagle, referring to the expansion of the city in the interwar period with the "Directorate" estate, whose urban layout resembled the outline of an eagle. The flat roof of the railroad station provides space for the gardens of the station's cafes and restaurants, as well as a rest area.

After reconstruction, the station will be fully adapted to the needs of people with disabilities - by eliminating architectural barriers, installing guided paths in the floor inside the building and in the immediate surroundings of the station, boards with a tactile map of the facility and signage in Braille, which will facilitate orientation and movement for the blind and visually impaired. For the comfort of travelers, electronic train arrival and departure boards and a modern voice information system will be installed at the station. It is also planned to install modern monitoring systems, access control, burglary and assault signaling, as well as a fire alarm system. The entire new installations and equipment will be managed by a BMS(Building Management System). In addition, the building will include systems using renewable energy sources. The reconstruction of the station is scheduled to begin in late 2020 or early 2021.

The reconstructionof the Chelm station, like, among others, stations in Pobiedziska Letnisko and Biskupice Wielkopolskie[info], is being carried out as part of the 2016-2023 Station Investment Program.

As part of the 2016-2023 Station Investment Program, nearly two hundred railroad stations will be built and modernized throughout Poland. Eleven of them, including the station in Chelm, are located in the Lublin Voivodeship. The main objective of the investments is to improve the comfort of travelers, as well as the aesthetics, functionality and accessibility of the stations for all groups of travelers. An important aspect in deciding on the modernization of each station is also cooperation with the local government, and this in Chelm is going well," says Krzysztof Mamiński, chairman of the board of PKP S.A..
