How to visualize human thoughts? A mural by Bartek Bojarczuk in Lodz, Poland.

02 of June '20

In Lodz we can come across many interesting and original murals. They have become an integral part of the city, without which it would be difficult to imagine it today. The mural designed by Bartek Bojarczuk of illcat studio is all the more intriguing because it was made of ceramic tiles. The artist wanted to capture the transience of human thought. Did he succeed?

Thanks to a unique collaboration with Lodz Event Center artist Bartek Bojarczuk of ill cat studio and the Lodz Design Festival, the factory city of murals and avant-garde is getting a unique ceramic installation, which Lodz residents and tourists can admire on the side wall of the building at 93 Zachodnia Street.

mosaic + mural

"State of mind" is a project combining elements of both ceramic mosaic and mural, referring directly to Polish urban planning traditions of the 1970s and 1980s. It is the only realization of its kind in Poland, and most likely in Europe and the world. For the project, 900 precisely cut elements were used, including 60 m2 of four collections of glazed stoneware of various shades and textures arranged in an illustrative composition, thanks to precise water jet technology, which involves cutting under high pressure with water and quartz sand. As many as 3,200 cutting lines were made for the project, and the entire installation reached a size of 12.2 × 7.8 meters.

The installation was created, among other things, thanks to the cooperation of the city, which "donated" the wall of the tenement, the Lodz Event Center and the Lodz Design Festival. The project was created with the neighborhood in which it was to be located in mind, so that the building and the space around it would gain a completely new face. To create this unusual mosaic, which not only complements the industrial climate of the city, but also fits in with its "street art" character, the artist Bartek Bojarczuk, who comes from Tomaszów Mazowiecki, was invited to create the project. The author tries to answer the difficult question of how to visualize something as ephemeral as human thoughts.

The work depicts the inside of the mind and is an attempt to show what is very fleeting, namely human thoughts. The forms of splitting and the different ways we imagine in a split second are captured in an image and stopped with a magic remote control, on which a "pause" was pressed. Through this paused moment, I wanted to draw the attention of any passerby to how much is going on in our heads, and to emphasize that although a flurry of thoughts pulls us down, we struggle to make that right decision. This should make us think, to slow down for a moment and reflect on the chaos we create in our own heads. - describes the author of the project, Bartek Bojarczuk.
