In an old tenement house in Wrzeszcz - interior design from em²

25 of May '20

Gdansk Wrzeszcz is an increasingly desirable neighborhood. Almost everyone who is active, spends a lot of time among people, appreciates good food and design would like to live here. Wrzeszcz is the district of the city where many Tricity residents flock to for an evening meeting with friends.

The design of the Wrzeszcz apartment is not an ordinary project. It is em²'s answer to the dynamically changing times. Thus, it fits the needs of the investor - a young engineer, local activist and promoter of sustainable mobility. The interior was created using suitable found materials. The result is an eclectic space with a touch of industrial flair.

The apartment is located on the first floor of a tenement house from the early 20th century. It has an area of 50 square meters - it consists of a living room with a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom and an antique built-in veranda, which expands the space by 17 square meters. It opens the apartment to a small garden located in the annex.

In the living room with a green tiled stove

Originally, the apartment consisted of a living room with a veranda, a large bathroom, a kitchen and an adjoining pantry. However, such a layout did not meet the investor's needs - the lack of a bedroom was glaring. So the kitchen was transformed into a non-existent room, and the combination of the pantry and living room made it possible to create a living room with a kitchenette.

Thanks to the investor's private love of history and old design, the architect tried to preserve the existing original elements and restore those that needed it. Thus, in the apartment there are authentic floors, door frames, brass fittings, handles and... a green tiled stove. It is he who, despite standing in the corner of the room, gives it character. Together with the investor, the architect decided to expose a section of the brick wall, which with its color perfectly harmonizes with the green and the natural color of the wood, giving the whole a pleasant tone.

The former pantry had two windows, which have now become an intriguing element of the kitchen, slightly set back from the living room. For someone else, they could be a hindrance and "the end of the architectural world," but for Ela Sawicka of the em2 studio, they provided great inspiration.

Despite its small "post-kitchen" size, the bedroom is functional. Around the bed, the designer decided to create a built-in closet to accommodate all the investor's clothes. Its color corresponds with the colors in the new kitchen.

inspired by Gdansk

The bathroom is surprisingly large for a 1900 townhouse. In fact, it's a bath salon, given the amount of space, and therefore comfort . The architect decided to hide all the "unattractive" to the eye equipment, among others, the washing machine. This room has a somewhat industrial character, which was provided by a wall filled with reinforced glass. The proportions of the glass are taken from the windows in the shipyard halls - this was the initiative of the investor, who is a fan of the Gdansk post-shipyard areas.

In the hallway, as in the bedroom, the original terrazzo in a very unusual color was restored on the floor. It was it that provided the inspiration for the front door to be covered in maroon. Almost every element of the interior design seems to play a game among themselves, which gives an intriguing effect to the whole apartment.
