Karol Wawrzyniak - briefly on the subject

17 of October '19

"10 Questions to..." is a weekly series of short conversations with architects and female architects, to whom we address the same pool of questions. In today's episode, we asked Karol Wawrzyniak of the TOPROJEKT studio for answers.

Karol Wawrzyniak is a graduate and doctoral student of the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology. He also studied at the Hogeschool Sint-Lukasin Brussels, and held the EU and Japanese government scholarship Vulcanus in Japan. He gained professional experience both in Belgium (51N4E) and in Japan (Atelier Hitoshi Abe Sendai and Architects teehouse Kobe). He currently co-founded TOPROJEKT studio in Rybnik.

1 Architecture in three words...?

Architecture has meaning.

2. The three most important buildings for you...?

a. A block of large plate on the Nowiny estate - my first memory of home.
b. The tenement house on Koscielna Street in Rybnik - I passed it all my life, and only saw it before college.
c. The headquarters of the studio - the interwar villa on which and from which I learn.

3. the most important book on architecture...?

"Anti-Object" by Kengo Kuma, but I haven't read Vitruvius, so I could be seriously mistaken :)

4. most inspiring city and why...?

Venice. It shows the relationship of capital with architecture, creating an extraordinary environment.

5. architect with whom you would like to design something and why...?

My grandfather, because I didn't make it.

6. hand-drawing or computer drawing?

By hand-drawing alone I wouldn't be able to do it.

7. mockup or 3D model?

Action model.

8. modernism or postmodernism?

Any "ism" is dangerous.

9. After-hours work or sport?

Construction work is also a form of sport.

10. architecture or business?

I admire people who can make a business out of architecture.

On our portal you will also find the Ore house in Ore and the kindergarten in Kleszczówka, two of the projects of the TOPROJEKT studio that were nominated this year for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award.
