Cinema Lab. Workshop for young designers

01 of June '20

How will the role of cinemas in urban space change? How are cinemas coping with the crisis? Will we need to redefine communal viewing on the big screen? How can architects and urban researchers help in this process? These questions will be answered by students and young graduates of courses related to the design, research and shaping of urban space, as well as those related to the cinema and film industry, during a series of online workshops accompanying the exhibition "Crosscutting cinema!"[info].

The organizers invite participants to take part in the open, free workshops, during which participants will create spatial and functional guidelines for cinemas during and after the pandemic crisis. Two online workshops and two consultations with tutors and project experts are planned, during which participants will refine concepts for cinema solutions. A research walk to a selected cinema space is also planned, depending on the prevailing situation.

Participants in the series will work in an interdisciplinary team, going through the process of diagnosing the situation to developing a concrete concept in the form of guidelines. Their task will also be to attractively develop the concept in the form of an infographic.

The Cinema Lab series will begin on June 10 with an online debate that will discuss the issue of cinemas in the city from several different perspectives and the current situation of cinemas small and large. Online workshops will be held on June 20-21. Consultations with tutors(Marta Baranowska, educator and designer, and Karol Wittels, sociologist from the Observatory Foundation) and experts(Piotr Gierałtowski, architect, and Marlena Gabryszewska, film scholar and cultural animator) are scheduled for June 27 and July 4. A presentation of the participants' concepts will be held on July 12.

Recruitment for the workshop will be open from June 8-15, qualified participants will receive confirmation of participation on June 18. There will be a limit of 10 participants. To participate in the workshop, you need to submit an application using the application form[here].
