Sports unite representatives of different backgrounds, generations and countries, and sports spectacles gather an increasingly wide audience. In response to the growing popularity of sports such as soccer, volleyball, handball and swimming, numerous new sports and recreational investments have been completed in Poland and Europe in recent years. In many of them, designers have decided to use seamless resin floors, which, thanks to their high strength parameters and easy maintenance, prove themselves when used in public facilities frequented by thousands of spectators.

So let's take a look at examples of resin-based flooring solutions that can be found in the largest stadiums, sports halls and swimming pools.

Epoxy-quartz floors in entrance, communication, catering areas

The original Peran STB Compact floor , 3 mm thick, made with clear epoxy resins and colored quartz sands, using mechanical troweling technology, was developed by Flowcrete and still sets the market standard in large public facilities. What makes this system eagerly used in sports and recreational investments is its durability and resistance to heavy foot traffic, as well as its aesthetic qualities, which allow the free creation of interior color schemes. This flooring is not only scratch-resistant, but also allows to achieve the required degree of slip resistance, while maintaining tightness and ease of maintenance.

Peran STB Compact was used at Wembley Stadium in London, designed by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Populous and Mott MacDonald, which opened in 2007. It was made over an area of about 54,000^sqm in the inner promenade, including walkways under the stands, food service areas and restrooms, through which up to 90,000 people pass during sporting events.

The same solution was used in the Wodna Nuta development in Opole, which was designed by Warsaw-based architectural firm Pracownia Studium. The Olympic swimming pool, opened in 2013, is one of the most modern swimming pools in Poland. Due to the constant high humidity and condensation of water, not only around the pool, but also in the changing rooms, sanitary facilities and other areas where wet shoes are entered, it was necessary to use an anti-slip surface, easily washable, non-absorbent, resistant to moisture, chlorine and cleaning agents. Peran STB Compact flooring was installed in this facility over an area of about 2,200^{square meters}, including in the main entrance hall, cafeteria, conference room and grandstands.

The Urania Hall, on the other hand, is a sports and entertainment venue in Olsztyn, which underwent a major reconstruction and expansion designed by Urban Architect studio and reopened in 2023. The concept for its modernization referred to the original futuristic vision of the facility. The designers wanted high performance and the visual effect of a uniform floor, in a bright, reflective color. As a result, over 7,000^{sqm of} Peran STB Compact flooring in light gray was installed in representative and circulation spaces, including the promenade running around the Main Arena on the ground and first floors.

Coatings with an anti-slip finish on the grandstands

Due to the safety of participants in sports events, grandstands require the application of coatings with enhanced slip resistance. It is also advisable that the flooring solutions used protect the concrete substrate from dust, are sealed and non-absorbent, and are easy to keep clean. The Deckshield polyurethane-quartz system works well in this type of application. This flooring is highly abrasion-resistant, impervious to water, and backfilling with quartz sand gives it a rough texture.

This solution has been used, among others, in the stands of Wembley Stadium, where Deckshield flooring in a highly visible yellow color was used to protect and mark the edges of 17,000 steps, and onstands at the Sports Center of the Gdansk Medical University, on an area of about 1,400^sqm.

Decorative flooring systems in exercise rooms

In exercise rooms, due to high traffic, it is advisable to use floors with high abrasion resistance. In addition, a seamless, easy-to-clean solution that promotes a high standard of hygiene works well in rooms where intensive training takes place. In the Leszek Blanik Gymnasium in Gdansk, one of the most modern gymnasiums in Poland, an area of about 2,100^sqm was covered with the Flowshield LXP system. This smooth and flexible poured-type resin floor, in a light color with a blend of blue flakes, combines excellent performance properties with attractive aesthetics.

Resin-based paints for rooms requiring a high standard of hygiene

Resin-based solutions are used in modern sports facilities not only as floors, but also on walls and ceilings. For example, Peran WWF, a water-based epoxy paint with the addition of colored flakes, offers a wide range of possibilities for creating patterns and achieving a variety of color effects. This material works well as a wall finish wherever intensive cleaning methods are used and a high standard of hygiene is required, such as in toilets, locker rooms and showers.
