New European Bauhaus. Hubert Trammer co-founder

15 of March '21

Discussions about the future of architecture and cities in a post-pandemic reality are not lacking. And although the restrictions are once again getting tougher, somewhere there is a "better tomorrow" that may be in sight. The European Union has set up an initiative to revolutionize the functioning of architecture in Europe in the future. Among the creators of the project is Hubert Trammer.

New Bauhaus

New European Bauhaus. What does it have in common with the Bauhaus? The latest initiative follows the idea of the original Bauhaus of Gropis, takes into account design solutions that focus on human needs, involving the community in collective action for space.

The essence of the new European Bauhaus is how we live together, our values, our shared spaces for work and rest, our collective and individual experiences. This is a project for all regions and areas of Europe. By promoting affordable solutions, it should contribute to improving social cohesion and solving housing problems. - says Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform, Elisa Ferreira.

Pole among the creators

Hubert Trammer was invited to participate in the initiative. The Polish architect, lecturer and architecture critic was among a group of eighteen people from around the world. Together with him, the creators of the new Bauhaus will include architects Shigeru Ban and Bjarke Ingels José Pedro Sousa and designers Mária Beňačková Rišková, environmentalist Thiëmo Heilbron, Norwegian activist Gina Gylver, urbanist Eszter Dávida and others. Hubert Trammer is a graduate of Warsaw University of Technology and a lecturer at Lublin University of Technology. The Pole is the author of many publications and exhibitions (including more than 200 articles on architecture). He decides on the nominations for the European Union's Mies van der Rohe Architecture Award.

green order

The new Bauhaus presumes to prepare the mechanisms that architects and designers follow for a post-pandemic reality. "We want to revolutionize Europe," reads the European Commission's website about the project. What does this mean? The New European Bauhaus initiative aims to popularize, but also put into practice, a new and better environmental policy. The policy has been dubbed the European Green Deal by the European Commission. The foundations of the order are economic development and resource conservation, but beyond that it also emphasizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions - even to zero. The Union has an ambitious plan to make the transformation of European cities into "greener" happen simultaneously, leaving no region behind.

next step

The goal behind the new European Bauhaus initiative is to develop an innovative framework to support, facilitate and accelerate green transformation by combining sustainability and aesthetics. By creating a bridge between the world of art and culture on the one hand, and the world of science and technology on the other, we will engage the entire society: our artists, our students, our architects, our engineers, our scientists and innovators. The new European Bauhaus will initiate a systemic change. - said Marija Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.

The European Union's official website dedicated to the design-environment initiative can follow the next steps of the 18-member team. An interdisciplinary, pan-European brainstorming session is underway - how to green and improve space, through design?

If we want real change to happen all around us - to make our common life more beautiful and sustainable - we should think about how the new European Bauhaus can combine the generation of new ideas with their application in specific places. - writes Cohesion and Reform Commissioner Elisa Ferreira.

inspire change

In the next phase of the initiative, five projects will be implemented to co-create new, ecologically sustainable and inclusive solutions. Noting the final phase of the project is the popularization phase - the communication of ideas and concepts that define the new European Bauhaus.

What would be a better, greener, integrated space? Ideas and essays can still be submitted about HERE.
