"The most important thing is not to fool yourself in architecture." Marcin Tomaszewski about REFORM Architekt studio

26 of May '22

As you may already know, the International Congress on Climate Regeneration of Cities in Lodz is fast approaching, and with it - the spring edition of the Festival of Open Architectural Offices. Into the nooks and crannies of which offices will we look this time?

Broadcast of the meeting is available on our channels

The first steps (on Monday, June 6 at 13:00) will be directed to the new headquarters of the Lodz-based REFORM Architekt studio, where we will be shown around by its founder - Marcin Tomaszewski.

Operating since 2010, the architectural office has completed hundreds of projects over the years of operation. These were mainly single-family houses, whose unconventional forms have been honored with various awards and titles of "best designed house in Poland".

The team currently consists of twelve specialists. Are you curious about their design process, or what qualities they look for in architects and architects looking to join their studio? Get your questions ready, you'll have a chance to ask them on June 6, and to make your time waiting for the spring FOPA more pleasant, we've asked a few ourselves:

Ola Kloc
: Where did the name of the studio come from
?

Marcin Tomaszewski: "REFORM" - has many meanings - "RE" means change/transformation into something, something different...so RE FORM was meant to be a response to the architectural forms we see now, and thanks to my work, ideas and overall vision - they are being transformed by me. "REFORM" is a new form of object that is being created in my studio.

Ola
: The studio is for me....

Marcin:... a place where I spend a lot of time, it is a place to work, a place to think, a place to meet. It is a place where my clients come and the task of the atelier is to make them feel special, that is, that they are in the right place at the right time. Quite recently we changed the address of the studio - the whole space is designed exactly to my expectations and needs. This is my place.

Ola
: What was your first project about?

Marcin: My design activities have always been focused on single-family architecture and this is what I have been faithful to for years. Also, the first project was a single-family house project.

Ola
: The project I dream about is....

Marcin:...all the time I'm waiting - I don't have strictly defined architectural dreams. Each project is approached with the utmost care and I try to make it like a dream come true - the investor.

Ola
: My favorite design tool is....

Marcin:..I guess I won't be too creative, I will answer briefly: computer. I appreciate modern technologies, especially those that make the work easier and thanks to which I can already see more than the first lines, sketches. Doing an early concept, I already know all the parameters of the building and I know that the degree of feasibility of the project is very high - and the most important thing is not to fool yourself in architecture - 1 cm is 1 cm and it will not change. And such certainty is what the computer and software gives me.

Ola
: Does the team have any fixed customs / rituals?

Marcin: We always celebrate the birthday of each person in the team lavishly. The birthday boy is obliged to bring a cake on the day of his celebration, listen to a birthday song dedicated to him, and believe me, its selection is never random, and we have one criterion - it is always one of the worst songs the birthday boy has heard in his life!
