Communication, cooperation, coexistence. 10 questions for Barbara Nawrocki of cityworks

16 of July '20

"10 Questions to..." is a series of short interviews with architects and female architects, to whom we address the same pool of questions. For today's mini-interview, we invited Barbara Nawrocka and Dominika Wilczynska from the Krakow-based design office miastopracownia.

BarbaraNawrocka - architect, graduate of the Cracow University of Technology. In 2012, together with Dominika Wilczyńska, she founded a design group called Palce Lizać collective. Currently, the architects co-found the miastopracownia design office, where they design meeting places - from urban planning to furniture.

1. architecture in three words...?

a. Communication.
b. Cooperation.
c. Coexistence.

2. The three most important buildings to you...?

A block of large slab buildings. The first years of life. The prefabricated archetype of home. Then all those, of different styles and scales, in which staying brings an experience of peace and harmony comparable to being in nature. The first time I had this, sitting alone in the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. There were many more such buildings after that, but this one memory will stay with me.

3 The most important book on architecture...?

There are supposedly ten, and I haven't read any of them! :) I recommend "Spirit of Equality". Seemingly not about architecture, but it is, as they say, "the theory of everything".

4. most inspiring city and why...?

Beirut and Bern. The most beautiful seemed to me the cities to which I traveled alone. The most interesting - those where I was guided by local activists. The two mentioned meet both conditions.

5. architect with whom you would like to design something and why...?

I would go for an internship with Hansen. With Aravena I would like to design something in Poland, and with Olafur Eliasson absolutely anywhere. Out of curiosity, for the promotion of pro-social design, because I'm in awe.

6: Hand drawing or computer drawing?

It works well in a set.

7. mockup or 3D model?

And prototype.

8. modernism or postmodernism?

Romantic positivism.

9. After-hours work or sports?

Dream.

10. architecture or business?

Fun.
