Green apartment in Krakow designed by SPOIWO Studio

30 of July '20

Lovers of cycling, books and Polish graphics - these are the residents of the green apartment, the family of one of the architects of the Kubatura studio. How did an architect hiring other architects to create a private interior work together? The key is friendship! Ewelina Ziolkowska-Jacyków talks about the apartment project in Cracow.

Architect Ewelina Ziolkowska-Jacyków of SPOIWO studio undertook a difficult task - to design the interior of a private apartment of a friend, who, in addition, is an architect. Thanks to this cooperation, a refined space full of details discernible only by a skilled eye of the designer was created!

Basia Hyjek: What was the main inspiration for this project? What were the investor's requirements?
Ewelina Ziolkowska-Jacyków: The project is the result of close cooperation with the client - a familiar architect from the Kubatura office - it is our joint work. We made a list of priorities, guidelines, answered a lot of questions about the family's way of life and came up with a layout for the apartment, in which the kitchen is non-standard in the entrance hall. It turned out to work great! Some of the high cabinets in the kitchen are for storing clothes and shoes, and some hide the refrigerator and oven - the two functions intermingle. This gave us a larger living room and a clear division of the living and sleeping areas, as well as comfortable rooms.

Basia: Where did you get the idea for such a selection of colors and materials?
Ewelina: We highlighted the kitchen alcove entirely with green color to get the right depth and bring order to the space between the kitchen and living room zones. The living room remained bright, minimalist in contrast, complemented by hanging "sculptures" of bicycles, which are an integral part of this family. We also worked a lot with mirrors to illuminate and enlarge the space of the relatively small apartment. The rest of the rooms are calm and austere, meeting the requirements of its occupants.

Basia: What was the biggest challenge, and what gave you the most satisfaction throughout the process?
Ewelina: The biggest challenge turned out to be choosing the right green color. We did a baaaar lot of samples on the walls and ceiling to achieve the desired effect, but in the end we succeeded. After that, all that was left was the attention to detail, which the average viewer won't notice, but the keen eye of the owner - the architect - will. It was he who made sure that the kitchen alcove was separated by a thin copper profile, stretching in a single line across the wall, floor and ceiling; that the structure under the sink was light, made of rebar; and that the joints of materials were invisible. This is what makes the design so refined and consistent.
