28 of January '26

The population is aging, but many people want to maintain independent functioning in their own homes for as long as possible. The way the rooms are arranged and furnished should therefore meet the needs of all age groups. SCHELL provides durable and functional bathroom fixture solutions that make it easy to incorporate the requirements of barrier-free architecture already in the building design.

As we grow older, our expectations of living spaces change, but the basic requirement always remains comfort and safety. These categories are of particular importance especially in the bathroom, which should provide comfortable use of utensils and freedom of movement for all users regardless of age and physical ability. Aesthetics also play an important role - bathrooms designed for all generations should be equipped with high-quality, timeless solutions that will not lose their relevance for a long time to come. All these issues should be taken into account at an early stage of design to enjoy a functional space for many years to come. SCHELL fixtures are synonymous with durable, safe solutions that offer design flexibility and inspire you to create bathrooms with the future in mind.

What are the basic principles of designing a bathroom for multiple generations?

Bathrooms tailored to the needs of people from different age groups should follow the principles of barrier-free architecture. DIN 18040-2 provides clear guidelines and guidance for planning such spaces. Among other things, it is important to provide sufficient maneuvering space, a non-slip floor and a barrier-free door with a wide passage light. In terms of the equipment itself, on the other hand, requirements include ease of operation of sink and shower fixtures, protection against scalding with temperature limiters (max. 45°C at the outlet), and the installation of easily accessible cabins with handles and handrails. Cabins must also provide sufficient space for mobility and be equipped with a non-slip surface and optional seating. The standard also provides for the provision of access and easy use of a washbasin. It should be designed to allow wheelchair users to use it independently. Basin faucets, like shower faucets, must be intuitive to use - both for children and people with limited mobility.

SCHELL solutions with the future in mind

Designing a barrier-free bathroom avoids costly renovations for the future. It's worth remembering that what is a comfortable accessory today can become an indispensable support in old age or in case of injury. One such solution is the SCHELL sink faucets from the MODUS and MODUS Care series. The former includes two models, one of which is equipped with a full lever and the other with a handle with a hole for easy control. This solution is ideal for children and people with limited hand dexterity. Even greater comfort and safety is provided by a special variant of the MODUS Care EH-T single-lever basin mixer. The elongated handle with a hole and ergonomic end allows extremely easy operation, even with minimal grip force. Integrated anti-scald protection and large, clear color-coded hot and cold water markings ensure intuitive operation. And in the shower area, the MODUS MD-T shower faucet will prove its worth, offering effective protection against scalding thanks to innovative ThermoProtect technology. What's more, IsoBody technology prevents the housing from heating up even at high temperatures of flowing water, eliminating the risk of burns when touching a hot surface. The clever design of the shower thermostat, with specially shaped knobs and pictograms, allows intuitive operation, even for users with disabilities.
