The "Izaak" project - which is part of the "10+1 Hrubieszow houses and gardens with climate" collection - has become a finalist in the prestigious international YAC University Awards 2024 competition, organized by Young Architects Competitions. This is a great honor not only for the authors of the concept, but also for Hrubieszow, which thanks to this initiative gained a modern and at the same time embedded in the local heritage vision of sustainable architecture. The project was created as part of the "Local Development of Hrubieszow - from Participation to Implementation" program, implemented by the Municipality of Hrubieszow in cooperation with the Cracow University of Technology.

why "Izaak"?

The "Isaac" concept is named after Isaac Rabinovich, the administrator of the ghetto operating in Hrubieszow in 1940-1943. It is a symbolic commemoration of one of the city's important historical figures and part of a larger idea - each of the houses in the collection bears a name corresponding to one letter from the name of the city of Hrubieszow, paying tribute to local history and identity.

The authors of the concept are Kamila Przytuła and Marta Szar-Wojasińska, students of architecture and landscape architecture, working under the direction of Dr. Marcin Gierbienis and Prof. Katarzyna Hodor. The project was created as part of a class taught at the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology. As the creators emphasize, it was a unique opportunity for cooperation between different design disciplines and joint development of a harmonious, functional and ecological living space.

home and garden - unity of space, tradition and modernity

"Izaak" is a modern interpretation of a suburban Hrubieszów habitat - a place where house and garden function as a coherent whole. The project refers to local archetypes - wooden houses with porches, shuttering, gabled roofs - but presents them in a new, sustainable and biophilic version.

A green facade, CLT-engineered wooden construction, integrated nesting boxes for birds, and a garden full of native plants are just some of the elements that combine ecology, aesthetics and tradition.

The project draws on the philosophy of biophilic architecture, promoted by Stephen Kellert, which assumes direct contact between the user and nature. A variety of zones have been planned in the "Isaac" garden - from usable beds, flower beds and an orchard, to recreational spaces with a meadow, a fire pit and a forest path. The whole project supports biodiversity, responds to the needs of residents and promotes a sustainable lifestyle.

YAC - a competition that opens doors to the future

Young Architects Competitions (YAC) is one of the most recognizable competition platforms for young architects and students. This year' s first university edition of YAC honored not only students' projects, but also their teaching supervisors. Among the finalists were two Polish projects - both from the Cracow University of Technology: the "Izaak" house and the concept for the expansion of the Lobz Palace by Aleksandra Walczak.

Competitions give great satisfaction, allow you to learn through practice and develop your portfolio," says Kamila Przytuła. - It's an opportunity to cooperate, improve your workshop and present yourself to a wider audience.

"Izaak" - a useful and sustainable house

The house was designed not only to harmoniously harmonize with the landscape and nature, but also to be socially useful, ecological and friendly to humans and animals. A significant part of the plot is occupied by biologically active greenery, a utility garden and recreational spaces. The architecture draws on the urban tradition of Hrubieszow - with a front porch and urban frontage on the street, and a village garden at the back.

The green color of the facade is a nod to Hrubieszow tradition - it reminds us of the family home of Prof. Wiktor Zin, says Dr. Marcin Gierbienis. - It is a house rooted in the past, but responding to the challenges of the future.

"Isaac" not only inspires, but also builds - a bridge between generations, nature and man, the past and modernity. It proves that localism can be a strength and tradition can be the future.
