In the latest episode of the "Foundations" podcast, we remind you of the conversation with Iga Szczugieł and Krystian Dziopa - graduates of the Silesian University of Technology, who talk about their professional path and experiences of design work in four European countries: Poland, Croatia, Denmark and Iceland.
First experiences and Scandinavia as inspiration
Their adventure with design began more than a decade ago, while they were still students at the Silesian University of Technology. Krystian gained experience in the Danish office of WE Architecture in Copenhagen, where he learned the Scandinavian approach to design, based on precision, teamwork and the daily creative process.
designing in southern countries
The next stage was an internship at the Croatian office of Arhitekti Filipović, where the pace of work and atmosphere proved to be quite different from that in Scandinavia. There Iga and Krystian carried out hotel projects, recreational spaces and residential developments, combining design with learning about the local culture and lifestyle.
Upon their return to Poland, they won the international Siemens Future Living Award competition, and shortly thereafter established their own design studio, Formatyka, where they carried out design, graphic design and interior architecture projects.
new chapter in Iceland
The next step was a move to Iceland, a country that delighted them with its space, cleanliness and tranquility. Here they continue their design work and achieve further success - including winning a competition to design bus stops for the new BRT Borgarlínan line.
Iga and Krystian compare the way design is done in four European countries, talking about the differences due to climate, culture and user needs. They point out that regardless of latitude, one thing remains the most important - understanding people and the context of place.
