The competition for the design of office and office furniture organized by Wydział Architektury Politechniki Białostockiej together with furniture manufacturer TOBO was an opportunity for those studying interior design to share their designs and realize them in reality.

The first prize was won by Agnieszka Jakimowicz-Łojewska and Bartosz Skarzynski, who proposed a functional series of furniture called WABI with an innovative layout and shape dedicated just for office workers.

Minimalist and functional to favor daily work

Our design was based on the construction of a trapezoid-shaped desk, which is made of three equilateral triangles. We wanted to make the most of the possibility of juxtaposing these pieces of furniture with each other, maximizing the number of employees working in one space, while maintaining the principles of ergonomics and convenience of work

- says Agnieszka Jakimowicz-Łojewska.

The WABI series combines functionality with aesthetics and with sustainable design. The authors planned the optimal use of the material needed to make the furniture so as to reduce waste. The chosen color scheme of the furniture board is intended to enliven the space, while white and wood-like accessories help give the objects lightness and elegance. In addition to desks, the series includes flower pots, soundproofing panels and coffee tables with space for retractable seating.

The grand prize amounted to PLN3,000.

how different can office furniture be?

The second design honored in the competition is the SOVE series, by Ewelina Sowinskaya.

When designing the furniture, I placed great emphasis on its minimalist form and simplicity. I wanted the furniture to have an interesting accent, which I managed to achieve through layering. I also opted for a muted, dark color scheme.

- explains the awarded student, who received a financial prize of PLN 1000.

The SOVE series was designed with offices as well as home offices in mind. The collection included desks of two sizes, helpers, pedestals, a closet, a bookcase, coffee tables and a conference table. The series has a minimalist and elegant character .

Competitions such as this one for furniture design give students a chance to encounter the practical requirements of a furniture manufacturer, and their concept can be put into practice. Students acquire social competence, and learn to convince a potential investor of their designs. This is very valuable knowledge

- comments Dr. Adam Jakimowicz, Deputy Dean for Development and Cooperation of the Faculty of Architecture at Bialystok University of Technology.

Below are selected works that participated in the competition.

The design by Kornelia Kordek and Gabriela Czarnowska created furniture that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also aims to promote concentration. The objects in the series are distinguished by their trapezoidal shapes, which, however, do not destroy the pure form of the design.

The SELI collection by Zofia Krynska is distinguished from other submissions by its flowing lines. The designed furniture is made of bent MDF, which allows such curves and thus creates a harmonious space.
