We regret to inform you that Krzysztof Mycielski, architect, architecture critic and co-founder of Group 5 Architects, passed away in February 2026 as a result of a serious illness. He was 58 years old.

This sad news was conveyed by the studio's partners in a touching post:

Dear Friends,

Krzyś Mycielski has passed away from us. Our Friend and Partner. After a long illness, with which he struggled with dignity and perseverance, Krzyś died at his home. He left us in the middle of our conversations, in the middle of our joint plans and unfinished projects created together.

Full of attentiveness to architecture, responsible for the ethics of our activities, Christopher attached great importance to the social responsibility of our profession, in which he was undoubtedly a forerunner in our environment.

He designed, but also wrote about architecture. He wrote clearly, without pathos, about design as a process, as an answer to a question, and tried to understand the authors' intentions rather than criticize them. He was always respectful of the work of his colleagues. He prepared and edited two books that described his approach to design.

He reiterated to us that we work for people. Not for design or space aesthetics, but with friendliness to the environment. In his view, a residential building had to bring solace after a busy day. To become open to the neighborhood's assets. Christopher was our design conscience.

As an academic , he taught thinking, asked why something was designed the way it was, looked for the sources of the decisions made.

He was true to himself, asserting that one should be oneself and not try hard to be a character that one is not. He was our barometer, our reference point. He defined the limits to which we could go.

Krzysztof's passion was traveling, and together with his wife Malgosia and daughter Marta, they traveled several continents. We eagerly awaited Christopher's stories from the next corner of the world. In recent years, he has built a family home in his dream town of Clay. There he drew new strength from his contact with the garden and the Bug River nature.

For the past year, Christopher had been struggling with a severe, illness that slowly, steadily limited his next fields of activity. He fought its symptoms, returning whenever he could to his activities. He didn't give up; as soon as he gathered more strength, he took on more activities.

It is difficult to write about Christopher in the past tense, we still feel his presence among us.

Christopher, we will stick to the principles that we developed together and that were so important to you.

Krzysztof Mycielski graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology, and his diploma in 1996 was awarded in the SARP competition. Two years later, after several years of experience in architectural studios, he became one of the founders of the Warsaw studio Grupa 5 Architekci, respected for such projects as the modernization of the Main Railway Station in Wroclaw, the modernization and reconstruction of the Abram Gurewicz Sanatorium in Otwock, the revitalization of the post-factory areas of the Polmos Spirits Factory, or Monopolis, in Lodz, or the iconic edifice of the Radio and Television Department of the University of Silesia in Katowice (together with the BAAS and Małeccy Biuro Projektowe studios).

He was an academic teacher, giving lectures and classes on the theory and history of modern architecture, on architectural design in an inner-city context, supporting classes on architectural drawing and graphics, as well as lectures on the latest trends in architecture. From 2019 to 2022, he served as vice president of the Warsaw Branch of SARP for creative affairs. In 2024, he was awarded the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity by the President.

Krzysztof Mycielski passed away prematurely, leaving the community immersed in sorrow.

We had the great honor of hosting him in 2021 during a talk in the series "Architects for the 21st Century", hosted by Jan Strumillo.
