Historic building undergoing extensive renovation
The tenement in which the Carillon Aparthotel is located dates back to the 2nd half of the 19th century and has undergone numerous reconstructions in the meantime. Around 1905, the Latvian merchant Alexander Mentzendorff commissioned the Baltic architect Alfred Aschenkampff to expand it, which resulted in the creation, preserved to this day, of a unified complex of buildings five and six stories high. Over the years it served various functions, gradually falling into disrepair, and it was not until a major renovation initiated in the fall of 2023 that it was transformed into a stylish aparthotel.

Art Déco-inspired interiors
As part of the masterful renovation, special attention was paid to preserving the original layout of the rooms, as well as the wooden structure, tiled stoves, tiles and other decorative furnishings. The hotel's design, which refers to Riga's cultural identity, draws inspiration from Art Nouveau and the Art Déco style in the interiors, with its characteristic geometric patterns, contrasting color combinations and fine materials.
For representative spaces such as the foyer, reception area, lobby, lobby, as well as for the communication, office and luggage storage areas, the developer was looking for flooring that would be durable and long-lasting, while giving the visual effect of stone flooring. It was also important that it be easy to clean and maintain, and that its level of slip resistance be suitable for public facilities. Another important criterion for selecting a flooring solution was the possibility of geometric patterns in colors designed by the architects.

Terazzo resin on an area of 140 sq m, among other things, in the representative entrance area
In response to these requirements, Flowcrete resin flooring experts from Tremco CPG proposed a terazzo epoxy system, Mondéco Classic. This flooring is made from a mass formed on the basis of precious natural marble aggregate and colored resins, directly on the concrete substrate. After curing, it is sanded and polished until the desired smooth surface is achieved, and then coated with a sealing varnish, giving it increased scratch resistance and a satin finish.
Mondéco Classic flooring resembles the terazzo look known since ancient times, but is more abrasion-resistant than its cement version, thanks to its synthetic resin content. Because it lacks the shrinkage typical of cement floors, it is crack-free and non-absorbent. In addition, resin terazzo gives a wide range of free design possibilities - it allows to achieve a variety of color effects by combining mixtures of aggregate in different shades and fractions with resins, which can be dyed to almost any color from the RAL palette. It also makes it possible to make even the most complex patterns.

Geometric patterns in colors created on special order
In the entrance area of the Aparthotel Carillon, in the reception areas and in the hotel's lobby, the designers envisioned making a striking geometric pattern on the floor, formed by square and trapezoid-shaped fields, in shades of brown-gray, gray-beige and ivory, which was only possible with this technology.
Koro Buve, the Flowcrete Authorized Contractor responsible for this project, made and presented for the investor's approval samples of the flooring in the special color scheme envisioned by the project. Each color was created by combining a unique blend of natural marble aggregates in three different shades with resins colored in selected RAL hues. The fields forming the patterns were separated by copper strips.
"The flooring is one of the most expressive interior elements in our hotel. The elegant pattern in the reception and lobby influences the positive perception of Aparthotel Carillon as a place full of elegance, comfort, designed with a sense of style. We are pleased that by working with an experienced contractor and using high-quality Mondéco Classic terazzo resin flooring, we were able to achieve a great result," - said Jānis Vilisons, CEO at Amberstone Hotels, which owns the Keystone Collection hotel chain.
The realization of Mondéco Classic flooring at the Aparthotel Carillon in Riga is an example of a project that made it possible to take full advantage of the advantages of this flooring solution - durability reaching up to 25 years, strength, including resistance to heavy foot traffic, and high aesthetic qualities.
