The Future of Architecture. A lecture by Tobias and Gabriel Wulf of wulf architekten

11 of June '20

Workshop wulf architekten - man and tool

Justyna: What tools, programs do you use in design?

Gabriel: We use CAD programs for 2D drawing. Of course we also get into the BIM topic, in 3D modeling we use Rhino and Grasshopper. I think we operate in very similar standards to other European architectural firms.

"I'm going to take over your studio".

Justyna: Gabriel, when did you decide that you wanted to follow in your father's footsteps and also become an architect?

Gabriel: I think it wasn't a matter of one turning point, but rather a process. My father never urged me to become an architect, but he didn't discourage me either. Architecture has accompanied me since I was a child, already when I was eight years old my father used to take me to construction sites, and one of my favorite toys was a book that belonged to him, titled "Architecture. "S, M, L, XL" [Rem Koolhaas, 1995 - editor's note]. Of course, it wasn't until many years later that I realized how important this reading was. So subconsciously, architecture accompanied me throughout my childhood. When it came time to decide on a field of study, the most important thing was not to choose something I would not be interested in. Then I realized that architecture was a natural choice for me.

Tobias: I still remember this situation from Gabriel's high school days. One day after coming home he came to me and said: "Dad, in the future I'm going to take over your studio." From that moment on, he consistently went his way.

Justyna: And, as you can see, step by step, he is realizing his resolve, as he currently holds the position of leader of the competition department at wulf architekten. Gabriel, why exactly competitions?

Gabriel: Almost every one of our projects begins with a competition. This allows us to create a strong concept so that the project has an identity. Competitions accompanied me throughout my studies, I did them then for myself and for my own development. I entered my first student competition already in my first year, and I can safely say that when I received my diploma six years later, I already had a lot of experience in this field. I find participating in them a lot of fun, so I wanted to continue this after graduation as well.
