Revitalization of a pump factory in Leszno - Sikora Wnętrza Architektura i ArchiTeka

16 of April '20

For a long time, the former pump factory in Leszno was more frightening than delightful with its original architecture. It was built in the second half of the 19th century on the initiative of entrepreneur Philipp Hannach.

Michal Biegajski, a local activist, is responsible for the idea of revitalizing the former factory. He already has many such completed projects to his credit (including an award for the best revitalization in the province). The concept included the creation of modern lofts and commercial premises.

As Michal Biegajski himself says:

Bringing a building back to life is not an easy task both conceptually, financially and organizationally. We also have to give it a new function - to adapt it to the needs of the market and residents while preserving its unusual industrial character. In our actions we pay homage to the historical expression of the city. I managed to gather the best specialists who understand the idea, energy and passion accompanying this project.

Mariusz Popiołek of ArchiTeka studio is responsible for the design of the entire complex of buildings and facades of the former factory. His main idea was to create a form consistent with the surroundings. However, the plans do not end there. As he himself admits:

When designing, we place great importance on the highest quality materials to make sure that the buildings retain their character and historical values, which are a great asset of this place.
The complex is located on the former fortification ramparts - Juliusz Słowacki Avenue, which perfectly surround the brick walls of the factory with greenery, which we also want to transfer to the interior of the complex through, among other things, green roofs. Designing in the existing post-industrial fabric is not easy - it is necessary to listen to the voice of past eras, without losing awareness of the expectations of today's world. It is necessary to balance and bring harmony between the old and the new.

The interior design of the post-factory lofts was handled by Jan Sikora of Sikora Wnętrza Architektura studio. The biggest inspiration comes from elements natural to such spaces - extensive divided glazing, brick walls and industrial structures. A winding steel staircase or columns will add character to the rooms, while capturing the spirit of the factory from more than a century ago. The designer is keen to preserve the character of the place, enriching it by playing with convention.

You can see other realizations of the Sikora Wnętrza Architektura studio here.

Jan Sikora tells about the participation in this project as follows:

I love such projects and activities. During the first meeting in Leszno I saw that the team led by the Investor - Mr. Michał Biegajski - is a real dream team. People unafraid of bold solutions, full of energy and looking for intense work for revitalization. I was fascinated by this energy and with his team we set off dynamically to work. The loft in Forge, which we designed, shows the potential of the place - nothing is pretended here. Future users of this space will find a rare product here: authenticity combined with uncompromising quality. I can't wait for this realization!

The plan is to open the doors of the "new old" pump factory in Leszno in a year's time. For now, we can observe the progress of the work and admire the visualizations.
