Introduction

The challenges facing architecture in the 21st century are more than just following technological innovations, trendy aesthetics or iconic buildings. In the face of demographic, socioeconomic, cultural changes, as a result of the ecological threats posed by the unlimited exploitation of the planet's natural resources, and the inflation of values, we are faced with a situation where practicing architecture is burdened with a unique responsibility. The world is consistently moving to cities. UN reports predict that galloping urbanization will make two-thirds of humanity urban dwellers in 2050. This presents all of us with a huge challenge. In addition to solving transportation, infrastructure or housing problems, urban land management will have to deal with climate change, demographic change or the ever-increasing aging of the population. The idea of inclusive and non-exclusionary design, accessibility to green areas, recreation, education and health services is a task for local governments, but also for architects and urban planners. It is, after all, about our common good, i.e. the space around us - for living, working, spending leisure time. Thus, the architect's responsibility goes beyond that of architecture itself and extends to environmental responsibility as well. Such a strategy is becoming increasingly important in architectural and urban planning practice. It is not an add-on to design, but its meaning. That is, of course, when architecture has a mission to create a better, more interesting, more valuable world. Are architects up to these challenges? We are looking for the most interesting answers to the goals, challenges and questions outlined above.

Aims and objectives of the competition

The purpose of the competition for the Maciej Nowicki Award is to promote innovative solutions in Polish architecture. We would also like our competition to increase architects' interest in the issue of architectural innovation. The intention of the organizers is to reward the achievements of architects whose works have a significant contribution to the shaping of domestic architectural culture.

The search for new ways of modeling space characterized by high quality and aesthetic value, the need to protect the environment, the development and implementation of human-friendly technologies and materials in construction and architecture, become the necessary conditions for sensitizing the audience and users of architecture to its quality and educational and educational role.

As every year, we invite representatives of the construction industry, material manufacturers and technology developers to join us. For them, participation in the creation of the award is also an opportunity for their own development and economic success. Inspiration from the awarded projects will allow them to reach for new solutions and, by way of feedback, give architects the opportunity to create better architecture.
