Dominika Ufnal - nature observatory

27 of February '20

Dominika Ufnal of the University of Arts in Poznań has designed a nature observatory in Fjarðabyggð, Iceland. The engineering work, done under the direction of Eugeniusz Skrzypczak, PhD, is a modular building located on Mount Kistufell.

Iceland's tourism is a steadily growing industry, bringing in huge profits. Wildlife and beautiful rugged landscapes are attracting more and more visitors, which is also increasing the demand for new tourist facilities. Dominika Ufnal's graduation project is a proposal for a nature observatory and lodging facilities that do not interfere with the surrounding landscape.

The goal of the work was to create a facility that allows for relaxation and observation of nature. Situated high in the mountains, the building makes it possible to watch, among other things: birds, the aurora borealis or reindeer found only in this part of the island. It is also an ideal vantage point for viewing Vatnajökull National Park and Mount Snæfell.

The author assumed the creation of a simple and non-dominant form over the landscape, which fits into the context of the surroundings. Out of respect for the environment, the facility was designed with minimal interference with the ground. Pre-prepared modules facilitate transportation and on-site assembly, as well as the possibility of expansion. The facility is divided into three interpenetrating zones: public, semi-private and private.

The facility consists of three levels

The main entrance is located on the second floor and leads directly to the observatory through a terrace. Its important element is an enclosed common area with a hearth. A staircase connects all three levels: the catering and technical area on the second floor and the accommodation area on the first floor. The building can be approached from the west side using an external staircase.

The project was among the list of the best art and design diplomas of 2019 of the "Font Not Font" competition.
