Igor Strzok dismissed as Pomeranian conservationist. Who will replace him?

19 of December '23

Igor Strzok is no longer Pomeranian conservationist. His decisions caused a lot of controversy in the region, and petitioners complained about the paralysis of the office's work. Three names are typified among the candidates for the new conservator.

Igor Strzok has sat in the Pomeranian Regional Monument Conservator 's chair since June 2019. He was appointed by Pomeranian Governor Dariusz Drelich at the request of the General Conservator of Monuments. In an interview with A&B, Igor Strzok, commenting on the dismissal, said that he himself had asked the governor to terminate the job.

Igor Strzok for A&B: „I fulfilled the mission”.

I am of the opinion that for 4.5 years I have fulfilled my mission to the extent that I was able to do so, Igor Strzok said today in an interview with A&B. — I believe that I have succeeded in changing the attitude of many officials at the Provincial Office for Historic Preservation toward a more careful analysis of preservation documentation and sensitivity to contemporary architecture in a historic context, which translated into long discussions that lasted for months.

When asked about his career plans, he said he intends to return to the architectural profession.

petitioners: the office has given itself a hard time

The actions of the office managed by Igor Strzok have caused a lot of controversyin the region. Investors and residents who wanted to obtain the relevant agreements at the office complained about the lengthiness of administrative decisions.

Local governments complained about the difficult cooperation with the conservator. Gdansk authorities accused Igor Strzok of blocking investments in the city, the value of which was estimated at a total of about PLN 100 million. The bone of contention was, among other things, agreements on the reconstruction of Ogarna Street, the detour of the Nizinna Gate, and the revitalization of Wałowy Square.

The decision of the conservation office also paralyzed the reconstruction of the historic bridge in Tczew. The conservator gave the green light to the controversial reconstructionof the public administration building on Chmielna Street in Gdansk. And more recently, the appearance of a footbridge in Oliva caused discussions.

Many investors have been unable to agree with the conservator. One example is the new building planned to replace the iconic LOT in the heart of Gdansk. Difficulties were also reported by investors in the developing areas of the Young City.

Many — as many as 59 - irregularities in the work of the office managed by Igor Strzok were revealed by the governor's 2021 audit. These included unequal treatment of applicants, protracted decision-making, and a mess of documentation. It was calculated that half of the cases were handled after the deadline.

name exchange

According to the portal Trójmiasto.pl, three names are mentioned among the candidates for the new conservator. They are Barbara Brzuskiewicz, an art conservator who runs her own studio, Dariusz Chmielewski, former Pomeranian provincial conservator of monuments in 2012-2016, and Małgorzata Chmiel, an architect, former Gdansk councilor and Civic Platform deputy in the previous term.
