An exhibition on a plant and in an old church? Jakub Krawczak of Wydział Sztuk Pięknych Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu designed the adaptation of the interior of an old Protestant church in Odolanów for an exhibition devoted to a potted plant of the Epipremnum species.

The project was located in a post-evangelical church in Odolanów located just outside Ostrów Wielkopolski. For many decades after the war, the building stood abandoned, but in 2019 it was adapted for new functions and now serves as a venue for cultural events.

The green color scheme, which predominates in the designed exhibition, refers to the original colors of the church. At the main entrance, visitors are greeted by a green wall with the exhibition title and a brief introduction - it serves as a landmark. From there, visitors can also get basic information about the installation.

The presentation of a potted plant is a non-obvious choice of exhibition theme. In Jakub Krawczak's project, however, the exhibition becomes an opportunity to interact with the Epipremnum species . At the following stations it is possible to get acquainted with the various leaf varieties, take a detailed look at the root system or use the chemical station, where the plant is analyzed for its properties.

On the first floor of the facility there is a free artistic arrangement and an area dedicated to the youngest visitors.

As part of the work, the author also created a design for a display - a green pot, made of durable material. It provides a solid base for the entire structure. From it rises a metal, geometric structure - a support for the climbing plant.

Its minimalist but distinctive form adds a modern touch to the display, while subtly contrasting with the greenery of the plant. The metal frames guide the plant upward, allowing it to grow naturally

- completes the author.

contemplation and education

The poufs placed next to the display continue the geometric themes of the exhibition. They provide a place to rest and quietly contemplate either the exhibition or the architecture of the historic church.

The author also draws attention to the sensory function of the project - for Epipremnum can be touched and smelled. Observation can be accompanied by listening to the discreet sounds of nature. The educational aspect remained equally important - the exhibition does not only serve as a space for admiring the plants, but also allows to better understand their functioning.

This is an attempt to create a space for dialogue between nature and architecture, between the past and the present. Thanks to subtle interference in the historic structure of the church and conscious design, the interior gains a new function without losing its identity. This is a place where the plant becomes a symbol of life, duration and renewal - not only of space, but also of man's relationship with the world around him

- adds the author.

The project was created as part of the course Interior Design in Historical Architecture, taught by Katarzyna Rudólff-Kanabaj and Beata Piaskowska.
