A complex with an urban forest in Bangkok,
designed by Grant Associates, Foster + Partners

[Material prepared on the basis of the studio's author's description]

A project that redefines the relationship between man and nature in the context of urban living has emerged in the rapidly growing city of Bangkok. "The Forestias" is one of the largest urban developments in Thailand, the heart of which is a vast complex with an urban forest of 48,000 square meters. Landscape architecture studio Grant Associates was responsible for the development concept, working with Foster + Partners, TK Studio Co and a broad team of specialists in various fields. Together they created a space that is to become a model example of sustainable, intergenerational living in harmony with nature.

vision: intergenerational living in the forest

The Forestias project was based on an urban design model that envisions the coexistence of different generations in an environment that supports health, education and social integration. The main landscape vision was to create an environment reminiscent of a natural Thai forest - with its abundance of habitats, flora, fauna and space for play, learning and discovery. Integrating elements of Bangna's cultural heritage and reinterpreting them in a contemporary urban context was also an important consideration.

multidisciplinary collaboration

During the conceptual and schematic phase, Grant Associates acted as the master planner for the development, and then handed over the detailed phase to partners from TK Studio. The collaboration between the studios allowed the creation of a comprehensive, cohesive landscape structure in which recreational, educational and social functions complement the natural character of the site. As Peter Chmiel, director of Grant Associates, points out:

Forest landscapes are crucial to the future vitality of our planet. The Forestias project concept of creating new forest habitats for both people and nature emphasizes the intergenerational physical and mental health benefits of close contact with nature.

architecture in the service of nature and community

"The Forestias" park is a harmonious blend of modern architecture and natural landscape, distinguished by innovative design and thoughtful functionality. The centerpiece of the premise is a futuristic building with flowing, organic shapes, with a green roof covered with lush vegetation. The structure, equipped with large glazing and undulating lines, blends harmoniously into the surrounding terrain, while the golden perforated dome gives it a distinct character, indicating the social or recreational purpose of the building.

This is one of the most recognizable elements of the complex - the Forest Pavilion, designed by Foster + Partners. The pavilion serves as a visitor and exhibition center, and its architecture expresses the idea of a city submerged in greenery. Organic shapes, glazed facades and a green roof harmonize with the surrounding landscape, creating a symbolic point of contact between technology and nature.

A network of paths and bridges, made of light-colored stone with black and white accents, runs throughout the site, connecting the various zones of the park and providing comfortable access to its many attractions. Delicate railings guarantee the safety of users, and the meandering route promotes leisurely strolls and recreation. The area is densely wooded, with a variety of vegetation, including tall trees as well as shrubs and lower ornamental plants. This has created a microclimate conducive to relaxation and contact with nature, while maintaining ecological functions. Water elements are also an important aspect - cascading waterfalls and fountains, where water flows down dark stone steps, creating a pleasant sound and visual effect. This area serves a recreational role, offering a play area for children and a relaxation space for adults.

a new direction for global urbanism

The project as a whole is in line with the global drive to create spaces that are friendly not only to people, but also to nature. "The Forestias" not only reflects Thailand's ambitions for modern urban planning, but also becomes an example from which other developers and urban planners around the world can draw. In the face of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and urbanization, initiatives like this one show that it is possible to design urban spaces in the spirit of regeneration, empathy and coexistence with nature.
