How to transform an existing neighborhood? What is too much and what is too little in Krowodrza Górka in Krakow? Dominika Pietruczyk of Wydział Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej designed the revitalization of the Krowodrza Górka neighborhood and won the Society of Polish Town Planners' competition for the best thesis.
The design process was preceded by a compositional analysis of the estate, in which the author identified the estate's landmarks, viewpoints, escarpments and the expressway. The work also includes a functional analysis and an analysis of the original development of the XXX-lecia PRL housing estate, built according to a 1972 design.

The work did not lack height and tree stand analysis, as well as space quality. The author also reviewed the presence of graffiti and murals.
Who lives in Krowodrza Górka?
The author cites a study of the neighborhood's age structure. More than half are of working age, 34% are of post-working age, and 13% are children. The survey, which was conducted as part of the project, focused on residents' opinions on greenery, neighborhood ties, security, communication and education.

When asked how often they use the estate for recreation, as many as 26% of residents answered "almost never," and another 15% answered "never." Nevertheless, a similar percentage-32%-used the estate in this way several times a month, 15% several times a week, and 12% daily.

The survey also looked at the number of acquainted neighbors - the highest percentage are those who know more than 10 people from the settlement, 15% of all respondents talk to them daily, and 20% never.
The sense of security during the day was rated by residents at an average of 4.44 on a scale of 1-5. At night, this rating drops significantly to 3.21. Another question concerned the length of the road to the nearest and most frequently used public transportation stop.
Does a housing development need to have parking lots?
Interestingly, when asked their opinion on the creation of underground or multi-story parking lots, the vast majority - 73% - expressed approval. As many as 43% believe that parking lots on the estate should be converted to underground parking.

The project involves the construction of a multi-story parking lot near the Krowodrza Górka P+R bus terminal. The author paid special attention to the southern edge of the estate on Wybickiego Street. It assumes the construction of a high school and a nursery school there, as well as a community center, an amphitheater and a housing cooperative. The area is significantly covered with greenery, among which a music garden has also been created.

Transformations are also planned for Opolskaya Street. A new library and cafe will be located there, and a rain garden and bicycle room have also been set up.
