26 of May '20

We know the results of the competition to develop an architectural concept for an indoor swimming pool in Piaseczno, organized by the Warsaw Branch of the Association of Polish Architects and the Piaseczno Municipality.
Out of 22 works submitted for the competition, the jury has selected the project by Wroclaw architect Maciej Poplawski. Congratulations!

The first architectural competition in the history of Piaseczno consisted of a study of the area indicated in the regulations at Chyliczkowska Street, in the city's park of the Mazovian Princes, on a plot of land acquired by the local government from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.

The task of the competition was to create an urban planning concept for the area of recreation and sports facilities, along with the determination of communication links, including bicycle traffic, proposals for the shaping of greenery and its character, and, in the implementation part of the competition: to develop a detailed concept for an indoor swimming pool and outdoor pools with an indication of the concept of energy-efficient and pro-environmental solutions, as well as cost studies for the cubature object.

In the study part, the jury evaluated the accuracy of spatial and functional relations, in the implementation part - the attractiveness, novelty and originality of architectural solutions of the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the accuracy of functional and utility solutions, feasibility and economic aspects, as well as the operational qualities of the object. The Competition Jury evaluated both parts of the competition study, looking for a coherent whole, taking into account the character of the local architecture and its scale.

The competition was won by the Wroclaw design office of Maciej Poplawski. The architect proposed a lightweight pavilion placed in the park between the trees. As we read in the justification of the jury:

The Competition Jury awarded the first prize to the work 006 for the correct grasp of the scale of the object and the adopted material solutions in the context of the location of the new investment. The use of simple in form and restrained means of expression, being in the right relationship with the neighboring buildings and the surrounding nature, testifies to the sensitivity and high design culture of the author of the awarded work. The applied grid of the structural module 4×4 meters became the basis for the formation of both the pure in form body of the building, clear projections and elegant spatial layout, in which the functional program of the building was contained in the right proportions and relations. Also noteworthy is the outdoor swimming pool area, which was properly integrated with the indoor pools through the use of a modular grid and homogeneous material. In the opinion of the Competition Jury, the solutions of the facility's interior, clean in its form and emanating tranquility, also gained recognition.

The jury also recommended several corrections - it suggested emphasizing the main entrance to the building from the intersection of Mazurska and Chyliczkowska streets, designing an under-basin and enriching the design of the sauna area with a central integrating space. The author was also asked to analyze ventilation solutions and the effect of moisture on the structure of the edifice, whose design is based on a glulam truss.

Daniel Putkiewicz, mayor of Paseczno says this about the winning work:

I believe that the new investment will be another showpiece of Piaseczno after the CEM facility, a new quality both in the architectural and functional sense. It was the functional qualities of the selected concept that determined its victory. I think that after working out the details at the stage of the construction project, we will proceed with the construction of a modern swimming pool with attractive facilities, a sports facility that all residents are waiting for.

Maciej Poplawski was awarded a cash prize of PLN 35,000 gross and invitations to negotiate on a sole-source basis for the development of full design documentation with supervision.
