Results of the competition for the design of the main station in Częstochowa

19 of December '19

A one-stage realization-study competition for an architectural concept covering the Częstochowa Główna railroad station and the development and management of the area in its surroundings was settled on December 18. The jury, chaired by Ryszard Jurkowski, awarded three prizes and the same number of honorable mentions. Congratulations!

1st prize

The first prize was won by the TOPROJEKT office, which prepared the project in cooperation with the Paris studios AND STUDIO and Studio Antonini.

First place was awarded for:

the apt combination of the Employer's requirements for the implementation part with those for the study part, consisting in bringing the elements of the bus infrastructure of urban and intercity transport closer to the railroad station, without locating the communication elements below the ground level, and functionally bringing the station closer to the streetcar line. A decisive and consistent solution combining the implementation and study parts in a flexible and non-closing way to complete the investment on the implementation part, as well as to continue the investment at any time. Finding a simple and contemporary form combined with a clearly solved function. Aptly defining the space of the Council of Europe Square, preserving the qualities of an important public space and complementing the historic frontage of Liberty Avenue, while maintaining the legibility of the alley's functional connections with the station. Arrangement of the road strip of Orzechowskiego Street by creating a legible western frontage giving the street an urban, pedestrian-friendly character.

The concept proposed by the architects takes into account the combination of the old and new structure of the station. The existing structure of the walkway over the tracks will be extended in the eastern and western directions, and the new body at both ends will be based on glass cuboid first floors, the larger of which (eastern) will house, among other things, ticket offices and an information desk. Passenger service rooms have been planned on the level of the upper passageway, and technical rooms - on the top level of the eastern section. The tall glass clock tower is to be a reminiscence of the Warsaw-ViennaRailway facilities. It was designed with a steel structure covered with white milky glass, so it will shine during the day, reflecting the sun's rays, and at night it will be illuminated by internal lighting.

The architects decided to combine the old and new structures by covering the entire upper cuboid with horizontal, metal, reflective panels. Due to the length of the building, the reflections will change as the viewing angle changes, which, according to the architects, will produce a lively facade with a constantly changing play of light. According to the authors of the project, the long, irregular, horizontal lines with light reflections are meant to de-materialize the object and give the impression of linear movement, which is quintessentially railroad.
