Sports, recreational and educational facilities have been proposed by students as part of projects to revitalize mill ruins in Spanish Andalusia as part of subjects in the Architecture major at the Silesian Academy.
The project is part of an already several-year teaching and research cooperation between the Silesian Academy and the Seville University of Technology, coordinated by Dr. Eng. arch. Bartlomiej-Bulawa and Prof. Arch. Ignacio Fernandez Torres, both of whom teach design courses in the Architecture major.
Last semester, students from Katowice and Seville undertook a concept for the revitalization of the mill ruins in El Carpio in central Andalusia.
The Spanish and Polish groups worked in parallel on concepts for revitalizing, incorporating this peripherally located site into the city's development. Currently, there is no vision for its further use or revitalization - hence the need for new ideas from the local government
- explains Dr. Eng. arch. Bartlomiej Bulawa.
The semester's work in their subjects was presented by the students on January 22 before the local authorities of the municipality of El Carpio and the province of Cordoba in Spain. The projects are currently being prepared for printing for a stationary exhibition at the El Carpio City Hall.

Among the works of Polish students were designs for sports facilities and recreational infrastructure, a university center with an energy profile, or an energy education center.

The mill itself once, as well as the current collectors and panels on adjacent land, is a great testing ground for energy production and storage
- says Dr. Ing. arch. Bulawa
The presenters also recognized the students for their comprehensive solution to the recreation area and their vision for the development of the adjacent land. One group also proposed the construction of an interactive DUKE computer game museum.

The work will serve the city authorities in taking a direction on how to deal with the historic site of the mill ruins. The students could not only work on developing valuable skills, but also influence the real development of the city of El Carpio.
This is a great opportunity to promote our activities (our university and Polish in general) abroad. For Polish students, it was a unique opportunity to train design skills in slightly different geographical and cultural and social realities, which is of great importance in the process of training young students in the art of architecture and urban planning
- says Dr. Eng. arch. Bulawa.

This is not the first time that cooperation between students from Katowice and Seville has resulted in interesting conceptual projects. In past years, they have also worked on a train station in Prague, the city of Ibiza in Ibiza, the outlying districts of Seville or the town of Valverde de Burguillos in Spanish Extremandura.
As announced by Dr. Eng. arch. Bartlomiej Bulawa, further exploration of Andalusia and work on the problem of its depopulating rural areas awaits the students in the coming semester.
