In the heart of Düsseldorf, on a site that for years remained an empty lot, a building has risen that changes the perception of this part of the city from the first glance. Curve X, designed by the JSWD studio, is not only a modern office building, but also an example of architecture that combines aesthetics, functionality and a sustainable approach to urban space. The project was the result of a competition held in 2018 by Hamburg-based developer Becken Development GmbH, which was looking for a solution to sensibly develop a plot of land deep into an urban block. The result exceeded expectations - the bright red X-shaped block has become a new landmark and a symbol of contemporary commercial architecture in Düsseldorf.

Architecture in motion
The building is six stories high, with the upper portion set back so that the height of the street-side façade is in line with neighboring buildings. The central break creates a courtyard - an intimate space protected from the hustle and bustle of the city, which plays a representative and functional role at the same time. It is here that the main entrance is located, and its location naturally directs visitor traffic to the interior. The "X"-like layout allows for a central arrangement of elevators, staircases, sanitary facilities and ancillary rooms, so the office space remains flexible and can be arranged as desired. The building's arms, extending deep into the plot, harmonize with the neighboring buildings, creating a feeling of both open and orderly space.

A facade that catches the eye
A bright red façade of steel panels gives the building a distinctive look, while slender slats along the windows introduce rhythm and order, emphasizing the vertical character of the facade. The first floor opens up with large storefronts - the building does not close off to the street, but encourages contact and introduces a friendly atmosphere. Rounded corners add lightness and fluidity to the massing, contrasting with the geometric austerity of the structure. As a result, Curve X does not look like a typical office building.

Interior for modern work
The designers took care of the comfort and functionality of the interior space. A two-level underground garage allows convenient use of cars and bicycles, while greened outdoor areas improve the microclimate and aesthetic experience. The X-shaped layout provides maximum access to natural light, while the central arrangement of technical functions allows for flexible office design in line with the latest trends of hybrid work and open space. The building aspires to DGNB Gold certification, thanks in part to its photovoltaic system and energy-efficient mechanical systems. Curve X shows that a modern office building can be both energy efficient and user-friendly.

The city in detail
Curve X is not just a building - it is a thoughtful part of Düsseldorf's urban fabric. The collapse of the central part creates a courtyard, which introduces a new quality to the inner space of the block. Green zones around the building, including areas of former parking lots, enhance the comfort of users and contribute to the aesthetics of the surroundings. The building harmonizes in scale with neighboring buildings, while bringing freshness and distinctiveness to the city - the intense color and dynamic form make it impossible to miss.

Curve X is an example of architecture where aesthetics and functionality come together naturally.
