Pearl competition at Couple House. Meet the winners of CAD Decor 2019

15 of May '20

Isolation time is at the same time the best time to catch up a bit. Read, check out new information, but also get inspired! On March 10, 2020 in Warsaw, we learned the results of the 2019 CAD Decor competition aimed at architects and interior designers for the Couple House concept. How did the designers deal with the theme of the competition? Each differently and each in their own unique style.

COMPETITION TASK

The organizers asked interior designers and architects to design a concept for a so-called Couple House with a total square footage of 118 m². The project was intended for a young couple of ambitious managers from Poznan. The initial documentation and description was for an old paper factory building. The property has large windows and an unusual mezzanine. The challenge? The competition task was certainly not an easy one. However, the quarterly "Around Ceramic Tiles" and CAD Projekt K&A, the organizers of the competition, received a lot of interesting and ambitious projects.

GALA OF LAUREATES

QUALITY was the most frequently repeated word during the Gala of the Laureates of the EU CERAMICS PER£A 2019 competition. The Gala, organized by the quarterly "Around Ceramic Tiles", was held on March 10 in Warsaw's Dom Technika NOT. Since 2012, CAD Projekt K&A has been a co-organizer of this unique event and of the PER£YS CERAMIKI UE competition. The purpose of the competition is to promote ceramic tiles available on the Polish market, distinguished by design and innovation, and to connect the world of designers with manufacturers.

The sixteenth edition of the competition, was held under the honorary patronage of the Association of Polish Architects. Partner of the Laureate Gala was the Italian company Main Laboratory Sassuolo, which comprehensively controls the quality of ceramic tiles, sanitary products and natural stones. The Gala was attended by a large number of guests - including guests of honor, such as Bohdan Lisowski - President of the Association of Polish Architects and Roman Sobczak - Director of the Department of Construction Products of the Main Office of Construction Supervision, representatives of awarded manufacturers and awarded designers. Marcin Pietrzyk - Product Manager of CAD Projekt K&A , summarized the competition and presented the awarded projects, handing out awards to the best designers together with Justyna Drogowska - Marketing & PR Manager.

AWARDED PROJECTS

The winning design by Joanna Ignaczak was awarded for its very consistent color scheme, skillful combination of different collections and manufacturers, and interesting combination of tiles with other elements of the interior.

"My main idea was to keep the interior in a minimalist style, to emphasize its unusual form and to refer to the history of the building through industrial accessories. However, the biggest inspiration was the tiles themselves, awarded in the EU's 2019 PERALS OF CERAMICS competition, which fit perfectly into my concept. In fact, the whole apartment is a play on colorful tiles from the Ciello e Terra collection by Tubądzin." [fr. author's description].

Second place was awarded to Izabela Piotrowska, who had already won an award in one of the previous editions for her eco house. The winner's concept for the Couple House again proved to be very revealing and creative, and the author of the awarded work was the only one to change the functional layout of the competition task.

"The guiding idea is to design a functional interior according to the principle of ZERO WASTE DESIGN. For this reason, the roles in the function of the rooms were reversed. [...] As a result, we have additional space for a study or, in the case of family enlargement, an additional room. [...] The idea of the interior is to create a space close to nature." [fr. author's description].

Anna Wejkszni's project was appreciated by the competition jury primarily for its technically good design, the large number of collections used, which fit well into the loft character of the interior, as well as the skillful handling of the color accent.

"My overriding goal was to emphasize the qualities of the place by highlighting its industrial elements, consciously using them in the interior and highlighting such a specific aesthetic matrix composed with modern Italian design." [fr. author's description].

The jury also awarded an honorable mention to Lidia Michoń-Szymczak's project for its perfectly prepared documentation, good combination of tile formats and color scheme chosen to match the character of the interior. In this project, we can also observe the skillful use of tiles in 120×280 cm format consisting of jointless lining on the height in the bathroom.

"In the arrangement of this apartment I refer to the history of the place, which is an old paper factory. The great freedom of space inspired me to preserve the partially industrial character of this interior. The guiding base in the choice of material was brick, metal and concrete. I didn't want, however, to achieve a total factory effect, so I broke this austerity on the walls and ceiling with a pastel floor." [fr. author's description].
