FRESH AIR THROUGH NATURAL VENTILATION

05 of December '22

Nowadays, we spend almost 90% of our time indoors - we are confined to our homes or workplaces for most of the day. Although few people realize this, indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than that outside. Lack of proper indoor ventilation can cause concentration problems, poorer mood and even serious health problems.

It might seem that the air we breathe in our homes or offices is free of pollutants. However, it turns out that the list of factors harmful to our health is very long. From excess carbon dioxide to chemicals, paint, plastic furniture to allergens such as dust or dander. Inadequate or inefficient indoor ventilation means that we breathe polluted air for most of the day. The long-term effects on the health of our society are difficult to predict. However, the harmfulness of staying indoors too long is noticeable by the simplest symptoms such as headaches, red and tired eyes, runny nose, and dry throat. Numerous studies also point to a link between the quality of the air we breathe and an increase in allergies or respiratory diseases.

Fresh air for health

Regular ventilation of rooms is the simplest yet most effective way to improve the quality of the air we breathe indoors. A solution that is increasingly appearing in projects, both commercial buildings and private developments, is window automation. Drives installed instead of a traditional handle allow us to automate the operation of windows and integrate them with the building management system. This allows us to program the tilting of windows at specific times, such as at night, to cool the building and reduce the cost of using air conditioning. We can also set up cyclic ventilation - for 10 minutes every hour or at greater intervals. Such a systemic solution gives us better control over air circulation and improves its efficiency.

Drive instead of handle

For the purpose of natural ventilation, chain drives or window hardware drives are most often used. It is worth thinking about window automation already at the stage of selecting windows, because then we have the possibility of using a drive hidden in the profile. If the woodwork is already installed, the solution will be a surface drive. Importantly, D+H window actuators can be painted in any color, even outside the RAL palette, perfectly matching the window profiles. As a result, the actuators do not stand out against the window structure.

Three most interesting solutions for window automation :

- Window automation for every budget
The surface-mounted actuator from the VCD series is one of the most popular solutions used in natural ventilation systems. The solution works well in any type of woodwork, in the variant of mounting on the window frame or sash. The actuator will open hard-to-reach skylight windows or large vertical glazing. VCD can also be an alternative to manual fanlight openers.
- The quietest drives on the market
Natural ventilation, which takes place silently and which cannot be seen, is even better for creating a good indoor climate. The slender housing of the CDC series drives means that they do not stand out against the window structure even when mounted on the surface. In the variant of mounting inside the profile, they are practically invisible. The design has been improved with regard to acoustics, making the operation of the windows extremely quiet.
- For the largest windows
Automatically opening large and heavy roof windows is a challenge that architects often face. Our drives allow opening window sashes weighing up to 600 kg. Designers can choose between chain drives from the CDP series, which are mounted parallel to the joinery structure, or rack-and-pinion drives from the DXD or ZA series mounted perpendicularly.

Windows opened remotely

The operation of windows equipped with the drives is controlled via an app on a phone or tablet, but also from a button or remote control. In the case of BDT-Advanced, there is a touch panel directly on the device. Drives integrated with a building management system give the possibility to monitor the operation and current position of the sashes remotely - while being away from home we can turn on ventilation of selected rooms or check if we are sure to close all windows before leaving. D+H drives cooperate with devices such as wind and rain sensors, air humidity or smog sensors, which allows the system to be expanded with more advanced functions.

Automating window operation is something that until recently seemed like an abstraction. In an era when we spend most of the day indoors, natural ventilation takes on special importance. Properly programmed ventilation improves the quality of air in the rooms, and we gain comfortable, maintenance-free windows, the operation of which can be controlled from an application on a phone or tablet.
