In an era of a rapidly changing world in which technology permeates every area of life, public spaces must respond to people's new needs. One such place is libraries, which are transforming from traditional book collections into modern centers of culture, integration and development. A {tag:studenci} from the Faculty of Architecture at Poznan University of Technology designed a unique library as a place of meeting, relaxation and inspiration for the residents/residents of Poznan. Her master's thesis, prepared under the guidance of Dr. Borys Siewczynski, is a comprehensive vision of the space, combining nature with modernity.

library as a place between history and modernity
The project is based on a deep understanding of the changing role of libraries in the modern world. For centuries, these institutions have played a key role in gathering knowledge and building culture. In ancient times they were located in temples, gymnasiums or gardens, being the centers of social life. Today, they are returning to this original function, becoming a so-called third place - a space that is neither a home nor a workplace, but a community place, accessible to everyone.

According to the author's analysis and research, modern libraries should be dynamic places, open to the diverse needs of users/users. They must combine educational, cultural and social functions, and at the same time create space for individual work, relaxation and creativity. The vision of the library presented in the thesis not only responds to these challenges, but also emphasizes the importance of contact with nature and the positive impact of architecture on the well-being of visitors.

A new space in the heart of Lazarus
The designed library was located at the intersection of Śniadeckich and Grunwaldzka streets in Poznan's Lazarz district. It is a place with a rich history and a strong connection with the urban development. The building fits harmoniously into its surroundings, making use of the existing tree stand while complementing the street frontage. A key element of the project was the incorporation of the former "Polonia" hotel, now the Clinical Hospital, into the new block. Thanks to this solution, the aesthetically pleasing, windowless wall of the hospital has been transformed into an integral part of the library, enriched with a glazed palm house that opens a view of the historic neo-Baroque fire station building.

nature and architecture in symbiosis
One of the most important objectives of the project was to create a space that integrates modernity with nature. Green bay windows, located in the treetops, create a unique atmosphere and add lightness to the building. They are spaces that encourage both individual and group work. Green zones have been designed on each floor, illuminated by daylight thanks to skylights with a power-generating coating. The focal point of the library is a glass palm house, connecting all floors. Users can observe the lush vegetation from terraces and stairways winding inside this exotic garden.

The gardens surrounding the library, full of walking paths and hidden corners, create an ideal space for rest and recreation. Parking has been placed underground, and an additional, ecological one has been designed among the trees. Functional bicycle shelters have been provided for bicycle enthusiasts, making the project environmentally and user/user friendly.

space for everyone
The designed interiors of the library are full of life and diversity. The first floor, which is the heart of the building, invites you in with its openness and functionality. The main entrance has been located on the corner of Sniadeckich and Grunwaldzka streets, but the building can also be entered through the café, bookstore or gardens. The bookstore space is distinguished by bookcases of varying heights, comfortable chairs and tables that encourage relaxation with a book. The first floor also features a brine graduation tower, a book return area and event rooms that can be connected thanks to sliding walls.

The upper floors were designed with different age groups in mind. For children there will be an area full of multimedia attractions and interactive solutions, and for young people there will be spaces conducive to creative and imaginative work. Adults will find not only traditional places to read and work, but also modern VR zones and music listening spaces.
The top floor serves as a sensory garden that delights with the scent of flowers and views of the city. Walking paths, surrounded by lush vegetation, create a unique atmosphere conducive to tranquility and reflection.

details, building the whole
The whole project is coherent thanks to attention to details. The inspiration of nature can be seen in every element - from the covers for the structural pillars, through the lamps, to the pots resembling the shape of trees. These subtle references create a unique harmony between the building and the surrounding environment.
