The mountains attract hikers not only with their picturesque landscapes, but also with an atmosphere of seclusion and tranquility that is hard to find anywhere else. In response to the growing popularity of mountain tourism, a project for a modern hostel in the Karkonosze Mountains has been created to combine modern solutions with the traditional architecture of the region. The project is the master's thesis of Bartosz Mrozowski from the Faculty of Architecture at Poznan University of Technology, written under the supervision of dry Magdalena Gyurkovich, and is a proposal for a new quality in hostel construction, taking into account both the needs of modern tourists/tourists and respect for the mountain landscape.

inspiration drawn from history and nature
It's no secret that a good hostel is more than just a place to sleep. It's a landmark, a shelter from the weather and a space to recuperate. The Giant Mountains have a rich shelter tradition, and their architecture has evolved over the centuries in response to the needs of tourists and the climatic conditions of the region.
In Karkonosze you can find both classic wooden hostels referring to the regional building tradition, as well as massive brick buildings resembling mountain hotels. The inspiration for the new project came from the historic Bronko Czech hostel, formerly known as the German "Schlingelbaude." This hugely popular structure, located on one of the main trails leading to Sněžka, burned down in 1966 and was never rebuilt.

The new hostel is not a reconstruction, but a modern interpretation of what a modern facility in the mountains should be - a place that is welcoming, functional and open to the surrounding nature.
A modern hostel that respects the past
The biggest challenge in designing a modern mountain chalet is finding a balance between functionality, aesthetics and an ecological approach to construction. In the case of this project, respecting the existing remnants of the former site was key.

The stone foundations of the former shelter will remain intact and will serve as an open recreational space for tourists/tourists. The new body of the shelter will be adjusted to the natural conditions of the area, which will avoid excessive interference with the landscape. The form of the building refers to the architecture characteristic of the region - simple masses covered with steep roofs effectively drain snow and water, and natural materials such as wood and stone harmonize with the surroundings.
Large glazings open the interior to the panorama of the Giant Mountains, providing unique views of Sněžka and nearby glacial basins.

comfort for every hiker and tourist
The designed shelter not only provides accommodation and shelter from inclement weather, but also meets all the needs of the modern traveler/traveller. The division into two parts - public and accommodation - means that the facility can function both as a resting place for day hikers and as a base for longer stays.

The main area of the hostel includes a spacious entrance hall with a reception desk, a dining room with a mezzanine and panoramic windows, and a common room - a modern interpretation of a traditional common room, where tourists can relax after a day on the trail.

In the accommodation section, a variety of rooms have been designed: from multi-bed dormitories for groups and students, through classic double and triple rooms, to comfortable suites for families and those looking for more comfort. The whole is complemented by technical rooms, a laundry room, a tourist equipment rental facility and a luggage storage room.

A modern hostel in the Karkonosze Mountains is not only about convenience, but also sustainability. The design incorporates eco-friendly solutions, such as the use of renewable energy sources (photovoltaic panels and heat pumps), natural building materials that minimize the carbon footprint, water-saving and heating systems based on modern technologies, intelligent ventilation solutions that ensure optimal microclimate inside the building.
All this ensures that the design of the hostel not only meets the expectations of tourists/tourists, but also fits into the current trends of ecological mountain architecture.

new quality among mountain hostels
The design of the new hostel in Karkonosze is an attempt to respond to the needs of modern tourism, while respecting the historical identity of the place. With its modern body blended into the landscape, functional interiors and ecological approach to construction, the facility may become a model for future projects in the Polish mountains. Although this is a design concept for now, the value of this idea cannot be overestimated. It is an example of architecture that not only serves people, but also respects and emphasizes the beauty of the surrounding nature.
