The role of steel in building a sustainable world

11 of December '23

ArcelorMittal 's new headquarters will showcase the unique role steel can play in building a sustainable world.

On June 21, 2023, construction of ArcelorMittal's new global headquarters, ArcelorMittal Kirchberg, was officially launched following a groundbreaking ceremony at the construction site in the Kirchberg district of Luxembourg. During the event, a steel beam, made of ArcelorMittal XCarb® Recycling and Renewable Resources steel, was lowered into place to signal the start of construction.

The location of the new headquarters reflects ArcelorMittal's historic ties to Luxembourg, where the company has its headquarters, as well as five industrial plants that produce or process steel.

ArcelorMittal's new headquarters , ArcelorMittal Kirchberg, designed by Wilmotte et Associés with detailed guidelines to "design a modern, sustainable building that harnesses the full potential of steel from top to bottom," is a showcase for the use of steel in sustainable construction. The building, which will be completed in the first quarter of 2026, uses 10,000 tons of ArcelorMittal steel, produced mainly in Luxembourg from recycled steel. The beams are made from XCarb® Recycling and Renewable Resources steel, which has a carbon footprint seven to eight times smaller than conventional steel, saving more than 10 tons of CO₂eq per beam. In this way, ArcelorMittal Kirchberg serves as an example of how steel with a low embedded carbon footprint can be used in construction.

The building will have the appearance of a crystal, thanks to its exoskeleton-based structure that spirals open to the city through a plant-covered facade. In addition to its modern architecture, the new headquarters will offer flexible, modular work and living spaces to provide employees with an excellent working environment. For example, each of the 2,600 workstations will benefit from natural light. The building will be fully compliant with three major environmental labels: BREEAM (outstanding), DGNB (platinum) and WELL (gold).

The completed building will also be a showcase for the deconstruction and reuse of steel in the construction industry. To encourage the next generation of designers to think differently about projects using steel, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg will launch an international architectural competition, inviting students to submit architectural designs for the reuse of steel. Working with a hypothesis for the reuse of a building that is still under construction will prompt students to look to a future in which the climate, economic and social context will change significantly.
