New apartment building on Bernardyńska Street in Wrocław

14 of January '22

A new residential building, Bernardyńska, will be built next to the Museum of Architecture and the Main Post Office in Wroclaw. The concept of the apartment building, developed by the Maćków Design Studio, is to fit into the urban structure by means of solid and material.

On Bernardyńska Street, opposite the former church of the Bernardine monastery, there was a parking lot for many years, which will be replaced by a modern apartment building. The unique part of the city is to be enriched with additional residential space along with a new square. The apartment building is also expected to refer to the architectural details of the buildings around it for consistency.

The square between the buildings

As part of the design of the apartment building, the architects will create a small trapezoidal square connecting Janickiego Street and Bernardyńska Street.

In accordance with planning recommendations, we decided to break up the mass of the designed building in such a way as to develop an all-access public space. In this way an intimate square was created, which will be closed by one of the most beautiful dominants in Wroclaw: the wall of the church of the former Bernardine monastery," says Zbigniew Macieków, owner of Macieków Pracownia Projektowa.

The passageway, which will be accessible to all, opens up a view of the Gothic body of the church with a Baroque gable. The flooring in the square is to be sparing in means, while creating a place where one can relax. The square is to include a small amount of greenery - complementing the character of the place.

architecture

The apartment building on Bernardyńska Street is to be a building that at the same time relates to its surroundings through materials, massing and size, while being a thoroughly modern building.

We wanted to create a metropolitan architecture, which by its scale, quality of materials and detail would refer to the best traditions of the past. We used crowning cornices characteristic of Wroclaw, the withdrawal of the last two floors or undercut first floors. On top of this we superimposed a contemporary architectural language based on the grammar of clinker. The rhythms of the pilasters flanking the loggias, their form and tectonics directly refer to Wrocław's first skyscraper, located near the District Post Office," explains Zbigniew Maćków.

The most interesting element of the building is the facade solution. The alternating rhythm of shallower and deeper loggias used is meant to reflect not only the structural layout, but also the functional structure.

The material used on the facade is clinker board - a material that refers to the historically used brick. In this way, the designers refer to the architectural traditions of the area - the Bernardine complex, but also the Main Post Office building by Lothar Neumann. The clinker panels are intended to give the mass the right proportion and lightness. The slab is laid in a characteristic herringbone pattern.

Consistency and completeness were equally important to the architects - the balustrades, woodwork and clinker slab were kept in one subdued range of colors.

The size of the apartments in the multi-family building on Bernardyńska Street will vary - from thirty to as much as two hundred square meters. The largest have been designed on the top floor - the most important apartments are up to three and a half meters high.

The building will create a special coworking space available to residents, including a full-size squash room, gym and spa.

fitting

The most important feature of the multi-family building on Bernardinska Street is the fit with the existing architecture, evident in the material used, the scale and the introduction of a small plaza. However, the building's architecture avoids historicizing solutions, using modern forms.
