Exciting projects using solutions from market leader RMIG
From the series "The most popular facade and wall materials - review 2022"

Expanded mesh facades
attract attention and interest with their vibrant form and depth. Sun screens made of openwork mesh sheets create intriguing clearances for natural light. What other possibilities do expanded metal panels offer? Let's check out exciting projects using solutions from market leader RMIG.

Expanded metal - industrial design of the highest order

Expanded metal is a lightweight, strong and economical material. Valuedespecially in modern construction and industry. Sheets made entirely from a single piece of sheet metal, do not generate production waste and do not require maintenance. The plasticity of the material makes the same grid layout look different from different angles. This allows architects to be uninhibitedly creative and produce a variety of visual effects.

Which variant do you choose?

RMIG makes expanded metal sheets from steel, aluminum, and acid-resistant sheet metal. It also offers several finishing options - anodizing, hot-dip galvanizing, powder coating. The material can be further processed - bending, welding. Depending on the project, the sheets can be incorporated into profiles, supplied with upward or downward aligned meshes.

The three-dimensional shape of the meshes strengthens the mesh's resistance to wind, rain, mechanical damage. A wide range of available translucencies (from 0.1% to 90%) expands designers' conceptual possibilities for expanded metalscreens and facades. Detailed characteristics of dozens of models can be found in the catalog.

So how to translate visions into reality and take advantage of all the advantages of the material? Let's learn about sample realizations with RMIG expanded metal panels.

A new vision for the facades of commercial spaces

An expanded metal façade is a striking and cost-effective way to arrange a specialized utility space in an original way. In the case of the construction of a multi-story parking lot at a Danish hospital, the architects' challenge was, on the one hand, to modernize the hospital complex by introducing a new facility, and on the other hand, to give the rather clumsy and stodgy parking lot formula a new dimension and aesthetic lightness. The expanded metal panels fulfilled both functions to excess.

Living façade

RMIG supplied more than 3,000m2 of 2 mm thick aluminum sheets to realize this design vision. The expanded metal facade was anodized in a beautiful shade of dark brown to blend in with the facades of the other new buildings of the expanded hospital. The panels arranged in different directions give the impression of irregularity to the facade. By bending and shifting the panels, the "living facade" effect so characteristic of this material was also brought out. Looking at the building from different places, angles and directions, we have the impression of interacting with the changing shape of the mass.

Green zone

Thanks to the construction of more than 500 parking spaces for hospital employees, the traffic chaos in front of the emergency room was calmed down and the space was given over entirely to patients. It was also important for the architects to expand the green zone around the hospital. Climbing plants along the expanded grid elevation and plantings around the site became an integral part of the parking lot.

Strengths of the exterior covers

The use of expanded metal sheets as sunscreen panels in commercial and industrial buildings makes it possible to effectively regulate indoor temperature, reduce the intensity of ventilation, and consequently save energy for the investor. In turn, to the users, the shields provide the necessary privacy without restricting visibility, thermal comfort and an optimal amount of natural light inside the building during the day.

Multidimensional clearances

The aesthetic and functional play of light and shadow brought out by expanded metal panels and facades was attractively combined in the design of a school building in a Scandinavian city. The lightness of the aluminum and the high translucency of the meshes in the sheets dynamize the simple geometric shape of the school building. This aspect is also emphasized by the use of two types of sheets with different mesh arrangements in 2 mm thick meshes. The flowing effect of the walls is particularly evident when part of the panels are left open.

Practical dimension

For this project, RMIG fabricated 1,600m2 of powder-coated sheets, creating a decorative and bright building screen over the entire surface. The expanded metal panels were installed at a distance of 2 meters from the walls. The architects thus obtained not only the aesthetic value of airiness of the mass and preservation of visibility of the facade material, but also an ergonomic asset. Such an arrangement guarantees free access to the windows and the possibility of carrying out repair work.

Expanded mesh in the role of facade and shielding

2in1 without compromise

The full arrangement possibilities of expanded metal panels can be seen in realizations that use the material both as a facade covering and in the role of sunshades. Such as in the case of the sports hall inside the middle school campus. This is a building dedicated to leisure and recreation. A place that teems with life.

Clear glass and corten steel

Glass is the dominant material in the design. High ceilings and large glass surfaces let in natural light. The façade overlooking the main campus is open, and the sloping landscape connects the hall to the surroundings. The massing is therefore intended to be transparent, accentuating movement and focusing passersby's attention on what is happening inside. RMIG realized the architects' vision by preparing 500m2 of corten sheets for the expanded metal facade and curtain panels.

Keep the proportions and make it interesting

The openwork expanded metal panels made of weathering steel here are the perfect complement to the designers' concept. As a shielding part, they were used only on parts of the development. Where it was necessary to protect the unplanted space of the campus from intense sunlight. As an element of the facade, they blend with the glass, enhance the transparency of the building and encourage exploration of the interior.
