Professor Barbara Bartkowicz laureate of the Tadeusz Tolwinski Award of the Society of Polish Urban Planners

Professor Barbara Bartkowicz, a prominent urban planner, architect and researcher of urban space associated with Krakow University of Technology for decades, has been awarded the Tadeusz Tolwinski Prize of the Society of Polish Urban Planners - one of the most prestigious honors in Polish urban planning. The award was given for outstanding scientific, creative and popularizing achievements, as well as for long-term influence on the quality of space and the development of planning thought in Poland. The award ceremony took place during the 20th General Meeting of Delegates of the Society of Polish Town Planners in Warsaw.

The Tadeusz Tolwinski Award was established to commemorate the achievements of one of the most outstanding thinkers in Polish urban planning. Its idea is to emphasize the importance of urban planning in shaping the human living environment and the role of urban planners in the responsible design of cities and regions.

The award goes to people whose activities have a real, long-term impact on space, design culture and the professional community, serving as a symbol of the highest environmental recognition.

scientific and design achievements

Professor Barbara Irena Bartkowicz is a Polish architect and urban planner, specializing in urban planning and spatial planning. She has been associated with the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology for more than 40 years - first as a student, and then as a designer, researcher and academic teacher. She received her doctoral degree in 1972, her habilitation in 1986 and her professorship in 1999. Over the years, she has headed units on urban and inner-city design, educating the next generation of urban planners. She is the author and co-author of more than 60 projects and planning studies, many of which have been awarded and honored in competitions organized by SARP and TUP. Her research and design activities focus on harmonious urban development, the relationship between space and human needs, and sustainable shaping of the urbanized environment, especially in Krakow and southern Poland.

Professor Barbara Bartkowicz has for decades been associated with the Cracow branch of the Society of Polish Urban Planners, where she served as president of the branch for many years. Her organizational and social activities have significantly contributed to strengthening the position of the urban planning community in Krakow and the region, as well as to building an open, active and intergenerational community of female and male urban planners. During the last congress, Professor Bartkowicz was re-elected as a member of the Council of the Society of Polish Urban Planners and serves as an honorary member of the Board of the Krakow Branch of TUP.

Professor Barbara Bartkowicz is valued for the high quality of her studies, her ability to combine tradition with modern planning trends and her consistent work for sustainable development. Her professionalism, passion and intellectual courage have made her an authority and mentor for the urban planning community for years - both for experienced practitioners and practitioners, as well as younger generations. She has received numerous state and community awards and decorations for her work, including the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Cross of Merit and the Medal of the Commission of National Education.
