Acoustic felt, mineral circles, vertical panels - how to plan an original ceiling

27 of March '23

Outstanding design and functionality in ceiling planning: solutions from MEXTRI.
From the series „Ceilings, wall coverings—ideas and inspirations 2023”.

An original yet acoustic ceiling with today's wide selection of solutions is an easy task for architects. What can they choose from? Among MEXTRI's solutions are acoustic panels in any shape, fashionable colorful felts and prefabricated elements that delight all visitors to the HUB skyscraper in Warsaw.

The multitude of decorative and acoustic solutions for the interiors of public buildings today gives architects unlimited possibilities. And what about when, in addition to design, the investor prioritizes functionality? It is possible to reconcile the two.

The era of flat and smooth ceilings seems to be passing. Today it is the innovative approach that counts. Each interior must be individual. MEXTRI—a Polish company that has set itself the goal of showing how to plan a ceiling differently—has just launched acoustic felts, which are increasingly popular among designers.

Why their growing popularity? They are lightweight, improve interior acoustics, and can be ordered in literally any color. In addition, MEXTRI has the manufacturing capabilities to cut the shape of the felts in basically any form. In interiors, they are installed in the form of wall elements, as vertical panels, as well as hanging decorative elements shaped to match the interior design or branding of the company whose headquarters they are to decorate.

Smooth and acoustic

Many builders, however, still prefer classic mineral acoustic panels. But here, too, architects are not reliant on boring squares. They can be circles, triangles or vertical elements arranged one behind the other. For the suspended panels of the SILENCER H and SILENCER V lines, the company has carried out acoustic tests at the Building Research Institute. They were conducted in a reverberation chamber according to the Polish standard PN-EN ISO 354:2005. The results confirmed—MEXTRI panels made of glass wool have sound absorption in the highest class A—white at the level of αw = 1.00, in wood effect at the level of αw = 0.95 (PN-EN ISO 11654:1999).

Fun to Break—More Than Plasterboard

Sometimes customers' expectations are so ambitious that classic shapes are not enough. Designers will bet on completely original, creative ideas. Another MEXTRI MTP solution—milled plasterboard—is helpful in this. Such a solution has been used, among others, at Ghelamco's headquarters in Warsaw's Warsaw Spire office tower. The white, cut-out boards create an openwork structure on the ceiling, which becomes a decoration in itself for elevator lobbies or conference rooms.

Notching and milling produces MTP prefabricated elements that are very aesthetically pleasing. There is no need to add aluminum corners. Densely incised elements give you the freedom to create planes with unusual geometries. And if colorful lighting is added to this visual effect, the effect can be amazing as in the lobby of the HUB office building—a project by the prestigious Massive Design office.

Sometimes a simple milling and incision of a panel in one place already allows to create a several-dimensional ceiling.

An alternative solution for plasterboard is to perforate it. The capabilities of the MEXTRI production plant give freedom: larger and smaller holes can be made in smooth boards. This improves not only interior design, but also acoustics. The surface of the ceiling is not smooth, so it does not reflect sounds, creating reverberation. It gives the effect of absorbing and reducing noise in the room.
