Oiling wood decking yourself in 6 steps

Independent oiling of wooden terraces
in 6 steps

We can protect wooden terraces with a product containing oil ourselves. Oil, in addition to the decorative aspect such as giving color, makes the wood hard to soak, does not penetrate accidentally spilled food liquids, but also precipitation, which can affect the durability of the wood. A surface protected in this way makes the wood resistant to staining.

WHAT IS WORTH KNOWING AT THE BEGINNING ?

During the first application, the terrace boards, if possible, should be painted on all sides. If you have coniferous wood, it is worth thinking about protecting it with biological wood impregnation products, such as colorless Wood Impregnation Cream 3in1. For oiling wood, you can choose two products Oil for Patio and Garden Furniture or Oil for Patio and Garden Furniture [eco]. The eco product, is an acrylic-oil suspension, which is not suitable for use on some exotic species. Remember that composite decking boards also need to be maintained, this can be done with the product Oil for composite decking.
Refreshing care is performed by reapplying oil at least once a year, but it is advisable to do it twice a year, before and after the season. In the case of intensive use we do it more often.
What if we want to clean the terrace, planning to change the color or recognizing that the previous protection is no longer aesthetically pleasing? Dirt, grease and old coatings should be completely removed with Wood Remover.
It may happen that the terrace has not been refreshed for a long time and the wood without oil protection has gone gray. This is a difficult situation, but not hopeless, in Remmers' offer you will find the product Wood Degreaser. This is a material that will allow you to clean the wood before oiling.
Preparing the terrace for oiling also requires opening the wood to absorb the preparations, and this can be done by sanding the surface, (we suggest using paper with a grain size of max 120).

HOW TO OIL A TERRACE

Care oil, carefully mixed beforehand, should be applied with a varnish brush, bench brush or cotton cloths, according to the grain pattern of the wood. After 30-60 minutes, remove the unabsorbed material with a dry brush or cloth and after 12 hours - that is, after drying - apply a second coat of oil.
After the oil dries, protect the edges of the boards, the so-called narrow frontal sections, that is, the places where there is the greatest absorption of water, which consequently leads to cracking of the wood. This activity is performed with a product from Remmers called Higro-Blocker.

WHAT TO AVOID WHEN OILING A TERRACE

Be careful not to oil wood with moisture content exceeding 18% and when the wood surface is heated, e.g. by sunlight. The working temperature should vary from 5°C to 30°C, while the optimal working temperature is 10°C to 20°C. For wood species with a high content of water-soluble tannins, such as oak, red cedar, afcelia, redwood, etc., precipitation can cause them to leach out. This can affect the formation of discoloration on light-colored masonry or plaster.

ADDITIONAL PROTECTION

Our terraces are often built near beautiful vegetation, which allows us to relax on a sunny day and gives us shade, but is also a frequent reason for green growth such as algae and moss. Although this sometimes looks very picturesque, we must remember that it also leads to accelerated decay of building materials, including wood. In such a case, to remove the problem we suggest using the product Glonosan.

Finally, it should also be remembered that the colorless version of the care oil does not protect against UV radiation (graying of the wood), so it is not suitable for use on surfaces exposed to direct weathering.
