What does a city that meets the needs of modern man look like? And is there still a place for community in it? Individuals studying at {tag:University} created urban planning concept designs for the northern area of the city of Radom. Their works were exhibited at the Mazovian Center for Contemporary Art "Elektrownia" in Radom.

The task of the students was to plan the creative transformation of the northern parts of Radom in accordance with contemporary urban planning trends. The subject was conducted by Dr. Pawel Trębacz, Dr. Renata Jóźwik and Magdalena Duda.

A city is a synergy of different, interpenetrating and dynamically transformed structures, constantly adjusted to the changing needs of its residents. The accurate identification of these needs and finding the right spatial formula for their realization, and indirectly building a sense of community takes place through the conscious and responsible shaping of areas of residence, service complexes serving them, and production and service areas providing work

- says project coordinator Dr. Pawel Trębacz.

multifunctional settlement, shared center and innovative transportation

The projects included the development of a concept for a multifunctional residential neighborhood. Key in it was the integration of the new urban structure into the existing spatial context and the creation of valuable common spaces.

The projects of the residential development complex of the "Brzustowka" area were made by two groups. The work "Common Paths" was created by: Julian Mularuk, Emilia Romanowicz, Melania Wozniak and Tomasz Wroblewski, and "Ties" - Marcin Gadomski, Antoni Jakubiec and Stanislaw Kotlowski.

Another task concerned a neighborhood center. The students were to create such a project that would respond to the contemporary needs of its users. It involved creating a coherent concept for the development of a section of the city by introducing new development. The aim was to improve the quality of life and attractiveness of the urban space.

What do modern cities lack?

The students also took on the task of working out the development of the city based on the projected new transportation infrastructure system. Among the proposals were new satellite housing complexes, equipped with social infrastructure appropriate to their size. As part of the project, the study subjects attempted to redefine Radom's urban identity.

[The works] show how young designers can contribute to shaping the city as a community of residents - a place that not only develops, but also builds social and spatial cohesion

- the coordinators add.

At the heart of the design process was the method of shaping the city's development adopted at the WAPW Applied Urbanism Studio. It involves successive decision-making steps. The first is to determine a clear division of the area into smaller, more homologous ones, based on current conditions and development trends. The second requires identifying the most important traffic generators of residents and linking them to a network of connections. Then, these networks are prioritized, and later gain a spatial form.

The projects realized by the students are a multifaceted response to the challenges of contemporary shaping of the city as a community of residents. The works show a variety of urban development strategies that combine social, environmental and spatial needs. Particular attention was paid to proposals related to an alternative or additional railroad stop, which - as a potential traffic generator - can become an impetus for the modernization and activation of the areas in question

- commented the presenters.

Student works were presented at an exhibition at the Mazovian Center for Contemporary Art "Elektrownia" in Radom, 1 Mikołaja Kopernika Street.
